Just looing for some info. Pediatrian office called today to say dd is slightly anemic. She is 10months and almost completey bf except for the occassional mashed banana. She shows no real interest in table food. Ped wants to put her on iron drops. I want some other option thats less constipating. Also I think ped and nurse are a bit bent that I haven't introduced a iron fortified cereal.
Anyway has anyone had any experience with this? What have you done?

If there are no other signs of anemia...

How did the doctor determine it? Did s/he do the pin prick test? Because w/DD we were told if they squeezed the finger while doing the blood draw it would report an artificially low iron level.

DD hated the baby cereals so we just went w/ WIC cereals (Kix, Cheerios, etc...)--- they have the same amt of iron, are fun to play with and DD actually liked them (she didn't eat much, but liked picking up small pieces). Also, Kix and Cheerios disolve very easily, making them safe.

HTH,
Kay

I just had my DS's iron levels checked Thursday. My doctor doesn't do routine screening (he's an FP), but I asked him to since DS was born at 35 weeks. His level was 9.4, and "normal" is 9.5 to 14. My doctor was completely and totally okay with that. We're still exclusively breastfeeding, and he said that as far as he's concerned, that could be DS's main source of food until he's 2. He said that as long as there are no physical symptoms of anemia, 1/10 of a point on some number chart that doesn't really mean a whole lot isn't worth worrying about.

I would find out what her number is, and then if it's not really that low, I'd at least ask another doctor what they would recommend.

I just called peds office and found out that she is 9.9 They consider 10.5 the cut off. Since she's borderline they really want to have the drops. I don't ! I hate to say this I think our ped is a great doc. His love of kids shows, he's patient with all the children. But it seems that he philosophy is soooo traditional.
