retained membranes

Hi. I gave birth on my own at home on Wed morning, everything went well. Last night after having a bowel movement I found about 2 1/2 inches of whitish membrane hanging out of my vagina. I took some angelica and went to bed hoping it would come out during the night. It didn't. It's saturday morning here now. My uterus is firm and low I am barely bleeding anymore, I am having what I consider to be mild sporatic cramping(the same sort I had with dd after my first birth) and I don't have a fever. I try to "push" it out gently when I am on the toilet, but other than that I'm pretty much leaving it alone. I really don't want to go the ER, it's 35 minutes away and I will not bring my newborn inside it, so that makes things complicated. I have an appointment at the OB clinic where I got prenatal care on Monday morning. Can I just wait until then to have someone look at this or should I really go to the ER now? Also is it being there going to mess with my milk coming in? Thanks in advance.

How did your placenta look when it was born? Complete?

If it were me, I would suggest gently twisting them and gently pulling. Considering everything you said, I bet they would come fairly easily.

yes, it did look complete. My husband thinks it's not from my placenta, he thinks it's part of her amniotic sac from the color if it. It looks kind of like chicken skin. I will try your suggestion, so far when I gently pull on it I feel resistance, but no pain from anywhere. Thus far we are keeping an eye on my temp and trying to gently coax it out while waiting for my appt monday morning.

Usually, membranes roll up and look like white worms. If it were me, I would get someone to twist it round and round, and then pull with something grippy. Someone else can pull it parallel to your legs, straight out from your vagina, instead of up like you might do...not sure how long your arms are.

I had retained membranes after my first. Keep taking the angelica. I think I ended up gently pulling them out too after a while.

thanks so much for the input. I did the twisty thing and it came out with some very gentle pulling. It was huge, I can't honestly imagine how that didn't come out when the placenta did. I feel great thank you again for the help.
