PKU cone thingy...

Okay, I've just changed my mood to chatty, since this is going to be the fourth thread I've started in like 10 minutes.

Is anyone going to be using one of those special cone thingies that are supposed to make the PKU test (okay, I know it's really called something else, but I can't remember what right now) easier for the baby? I read about them around here somewhere shortly after DS was born, but was too braindead to actually take note of where to order them, and why exactly they made it better.

So, if anyone has any idea what I'm talking about, can you point me in the right direction? If you are planning to use one or have used one in the past, tell us about it!

I have NO idea.... but when you said "cone thingy" I immediately thought of the bell clamp they sometimes use instead of a reg cutting circ??? does that help at all??? are the two mixed up somehow??

PKU is a heel stick with a lancet.. don't know HOW they could make that easier except they sometimes put a little hot pack on their heel to increase blood flow... maybe EMLA cream to numb the heel first, that's ALL I can think of to make the stick any easier on babe... ???

sorry, not much help from me..

I have no idea. But I bet if I was eating an ice cream cone at the same time it may help Me deal better with the fact that my new baby was getting stuck.

Sorry, no help, but am curious if anyone knows.

Sorry, no help here either. I just keep thinking of a dog after a trip to the vet getting a megaphone cone on its neck.

I am at your respsonses ladies!

This was something that was supposed to be pushed up against the site of the prick to help the blood flow faster and easier onto the test paper. I'm not really sure how it does that...maybe I should try to find the thread...hmmmm...

Well, I can't find it, so I guess maybe I didn't post in it. I don't really feel like searching through my waaaay too many pages of subscribed threads either. Oh, well!

Really, it's not a huge deal. I just remember that mw had to keep squeezing and squeezing and squeezing, because DS's blood was clotting so well. The impression I got about this thing is that it would have prevented all of that extra pain.

Okay, I have no idea why I was thinking of a cone!

Yes, I guess that's it. I'm going to look into it, and a few other brands that have been mentioned in some threads I found. One of these may have been the one I had originally stumbled upon, but I really don't know now, since it's been so long (these are good for other testing info too): http://www.mothering.com/discussions...ight=quickheel

Ugh, I hate the squeezing. Those poor little tender newborn feet! My second son had to be repeatedly stuck 'cause it just wasn't flowing. (She was an apprentice who apparently didn't realize the 'milking' technique didn't work well!)

That was what happened to me when I was born, except after all that they messed up the test and had to redo it completely. My mom was a wreck!
