Herbal Sitz Bath

I am looking for your suggestions for a herbal sitz bath. I had one with #3 and loved it! I passed it long and can't remember what the make was.

Side questions...what should I really look for in a herbal sitz bath? comfrey? calendula, tea tree oil? sea salt?

thanks for the help!

greenbrierherbalist.com

I like her sitz bath.

My mws have stated comfrey, calendula... I would stay away from TTO on open cuts as well as Arnica oil. I firmly believe my use of arnica and calendula oils prevented proper healing. The barier they created felt good, but prevented the skin from attatching to itself.

A friend passed this recipe along to me when I was pregnant with dd. I found it VERY soothing and will definitely be making more for this next birth.

1/4 pound each of:
Comfrey root or leaves
Calendula flowers
Lavender flowers

Combine the herbs and keep in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Steep 1/2 cup of herbs in 1/2 gallon boiling water for at least an hour (longer is better).

Pour the herb bath directly into the tub through a strainer if used within 24 hours. Or, strain the fluid and it will keep in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

I used the Wishgarden Afterbirth Sitz. It has: Uva Ursi leaf, Yarrow flower, Plantain leaf, Sage leaf, Witch Hazel leaf, Comfrey leaf & root & Sea salt. I had no complaints and I even still have a cannister which does not expire until right after my next birth. I guess there are benefits after all to having a surprise baby.

Uvi Ursi, Sage, Comfrey, echinacea, white oak bark and garlic, some sea salt too!

Not my mix, someone else off MDC suggested it, and it sounded good. But, now that I've seen a few more, I might copy those down too

I wrote down the ingredients and directions from the herbal bath my doula brought me after dd's birth because it was so heavenly. It's distributed by a local company and I don't think they have a website, but perhaps the list of ingredients will be useful to you:

Comfrey Herbal Sitz Bath

Organic comfrey leaf, organic comfrey root, organic uva ursi leaf, shepherd's purse, coarse sea salt

For post-partum use, heals perineum, reduces inflammation, dries umbilicus. Can be used in a bath, sitz bath, or a peri bottle.

Directions:
1. Bring 1 gal of water to a boil. Add entire contents of 1 bag. Stir.
2. Reduce heat and bring mixture to a low simmer. Simmer covered but slightly vented for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. (Optional: in the last 5 minutes of simmering, add 1 clove of chopped garlic to the mixture.)
3. Remove mixture from heat and allow to steep for 20 additional minutes.
4. Strain mixture into another clean, large container to remove the loose herbs. Cheesecloth in double thickness draped over a colander works well for this purpose. (Optional: Bring up the corners of the cheesecloth containing the used herbs and tie with string to make a sort of tea bag. Store in an airtight container in the fridge. On the 4th day all 3 of the used herbs can be added, still wrapped in cheesecloth, to boiling water to make a 4th sitz bath. Again, simmer for 1 hour and steep for 20 minutes.)
5. Use cooled mixture to fill 1 or 2 peri-bottles either with the full strength mixture or diluted up to a 50% solution with water. Store peri bottles covered in the fridge until ready to use.
6. Add remaining mixture to 6 or 8 inches of warm bath water at a comfortable temperature in a clean bath tub, or full strength in a sitz bath.
7. The mother should then sit in the bath water, soaking for at least 20 minutes.

The essentials for me are comfrey, calendula, and lavender. The bath I usually use has uva ursi and shepherd's purse and garlic and sea salt in it as well. I do think that I have had fewer postpartum infections amongst moms who do baths and certainly faster, more painless healing. Also baby's cords tend to drop off within 4-5 days if they go in too.

Yarrow is a good substitute for comfrey -- the whole foods by me won't sell comfrey because of concerns about safety with it orally, but I feel confident it is just fine in a bath or poultice. I use witch hazel every once in a while too.

I always give Motherlove brand. Haven't used it msyelf, but the smell is divine and the herbs are right.
