Reasonable request?

My BPs have gone up over the past few weeks and I officially have pre-E. My doc has already talked induction though I am a VBAC (she has experience with this and doesn't like to do this but it is an option on the table and she knows to stay away from chemicals as much as possible).

I will be 36w1d at my next appointment and my BPs are steadily getting higher along with a whole host of other symptoms of pre-E, constant pitting edema that isn't much better in the morning, occasional blurring and stars in my vision, URQ pain, etc.

I am wondering if it is reasonable to ask that my membranes be swept during my next pelvic at the appointment on Tuesday. I think I am a bit effaced but couldn't tell you about dialation. I haven't had a pelvic since my initial prenatal exam so I truely don't know.

I am just afraid of an emergency popping up and needing an urgent c/s. I seized in labor with my first. This will be my 5th living child (God willing) and I have had 14 pregnancies (mostly early losses, 2 late ones).

Am I right in thinking that if my body isn't ready, stripping my membranes will either not be possible (not dialated enough) or it won't do anything anyway. I have had them stripped in the past with a different pregnancy at term and it didn't work.

Thanks for any input.

Celina

Edited to add: Membranes stripping is my idea. It hasn't been offered to me but I thought it might help push things in the right direction rather going straight to AROM if they think it is necessary to induce me in the next couple of weeks (which I think they will given my symptoms.)

Sounds reasonable to me. Also ask about foley catheter induction before beginning chemical or arom if you do get to actual induction. Take good care of yourself...

Just another thought: have you been tested for GBS yet? Stripping of the membranes can, in rare cases, cause tears (or rupture) in the amniotic sac, and therefore introduce infection. Also, if the procedure accidentally caused a rupture, you'd be on the clock from that point on. My OB did not sweep membranes because in her experience it did not help get labor going and it hurt.

Have you checked the Brewer Diet? I have read that getting 100 grams of protein a day, enough salt to taste, and plenty of water, even this late in the game, can really help with the symptoms of toxemia. I hope you are able to hang on for a few more weeks and go into labor spontaneously. Good luck.

You might try homeopathy or acupuncture to help.
Nettles help nourish the kidneys. Dandelion leaf is a safe diuretic
Nervines like oat seed, passion flower, skullcap, linden flower will help lower bp
Milk Thistle seed for liver support
There are also drinks that are like pre-digested protein/amino acids you can find in the health food store that will up your intake.
