Still working on a baby name for our little boy born last week. Can you please give me your impression and feedback on the name Iain - the scottish variation of Ian?

The first two names would be Iain James....

It's actually, from what I know, the Gaelic variant. It's my DS's name and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! It is unusual here so people will go, "huh? two I's?" - but I think it's totally worth it. And Iain James is a great combination!

Like the name but do not like the spelling.
You are setting him up for a life of torture. Constantly having to spell and respell his name and explain the pronunciation. Don't do it to him.

I can see having to make sure people spell it correctly, but it doesn't seem like a hard name to pronounce at all. Both dh and I knew what it was right away.
As for the spelling, I have a not common, but not uncommon name, and peoeple still always ask me how it's spelled. With all the creative spellings of names now, it's going to be asked no matter what.

I am utterly convinced that people are going to mess up EVERY name out there, at one time or another. Seriously, my DH has a story about someone mispronouncing the name BOB!

In my experience, most people can pronounce Iain. Some get it wrong, but they probably wouldn't know how to say it without the additional "i," either. I have a Gabriel, and he gets called Gabrielle regularly. And I thought it was great marrying a man with a very well-known last name (as in, every one who's been as far as middle school has heard of it), and it still gets mispronounced ALL the time. You just can't win!

The great thing with Iain James is that if he does find his first name to be annoying (and I doubt he would), he can always use James, a classic name that is much less likely to be messed up.

Is it pronounced like Ian? I like Ian and I like unusual names, if you like it then go for it. We used James as a middle name for our ds based on the same logic in Heather's post. All of our kids have less-common first names (Darwin, Solomon, Miriam, Rasmus) and more well-known middle names (Peter, Gregory, Louise, James).

I have a very common first name -- I often wasn't the only one in my class -- and people still ask how to spell it/misspell it.

I grew up with a common name that had an uncommon spelling, and while it's definitely a hassle (I tell people my mom smoked a lot of pot in the 70s to come up with it ) it's not the end of the world. I actually use whether people spell my name correctly or not as a gauge of how much I should pay attention to them. People who spend the attention to how to spell my name right are more likely to receive MY time and attention (and in many cases, money). When people consistently fail to spell it correctly, even after several reminders, I take it as a sign that they don't respect my time or company very much.

I love Iain James, it's a beautiful, strong name. Both of the names DH and I have picked out are odd names with odd spellings, though, so maybe I'm biased.

Thank you everyone! Great feedback - so great that my husband took out the ink pen and wrote it down on the birth cert papers! So, our son has a name: Iain James! (yes, pronounced like Ian)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
