What adult costumes do you have that you can take straight out of your closet?

Hi all,

We are getting ready for Halloween/Samhain here and are on a budget. As in we have no money for our costumes. We are attending a party on the 31st were we are supposed to be wearing some. Do any of you have costume ideas for things straight out of the closet?

TIA:

A pesant top amd flowy skirt with a head scarf and a sawl for a gypsy.
A puffy white shirt and a head scarf for a pirate. You could make an eye patch out of black paper.
You could wear his clothes and go as a man. And he could wear yours and go as a woman.
You could wear all black clothes and paint your faces to be pumpkins.

If you have any sort of formal dress, get a tiara (or borrow your daughter's). You're now a prom queen/beauty queen.

PJs, robe, slippers, curlers...housewife.

My DH is a soldier, so, I've gone as that before...but if your dh has a profession, do that....

Not knowing what clothes you have limits my ideas...I know I could go as a catholic school girl (naughty or not ) pregnant nun - did this before (black graduation gown, rosary, pillow underneath, and a sign reading "The devil made me do it" with a downward arrow...I don't recommend this in a highly catholic town , punk rocker, and Jackie O (I like retro clothing, and actually have all the components except gloves....)

In a Catholic town or not, this is highly distasteful and not at all funny. I never see costumes mocking other religions (and rightfully so, as no one's religion should be mocked), but for some reason, making fun of Catholicism is somehow always okay in our society. Some days, after I've read the latest anti-Catholic stunt Madonna's pulled or read some AP article that's written in such a way to make the Vatican sound like it's run by Darth Vader, it feels like the last accepted discrimination.

Here's the fact, inconvenient though it may be: Whether or not you agree with Catholicism, you should never undermine it (or any person's religious beliefs), even if you think they've got it all wrong. That's just basic respect, and every person on the planet deserves it.

So think before you act. A pregnant nun costume may seem like an innocent joke to you, but Catholics have to take enough mockery from the world without seeing it in this form, too. Just having to write this freakin' post has put a damper on my whole evening...

Once for a last minute costume, I wore a blue shirt and pants and stuck fish stickers all over myself. I also carried a fish beanie babie I had in the house. I went as the ocean. i think it cost me 99cents for the fish stickers.

One year, I went as Ophelia after she drowned. I wore a long velvet dress, to which I stitched dead leaves & sticks (also put some in my hair.) Then I used watercolors to do a blueish-green wash over my face and neck, dark circles under eyes, lines of goop pouring from mouth, etc.

Can you use watercolours on your skin? Does it wash out well? That would really help me with dd's costume.

My point is, it's wrong to mock any religion in any format. Just because it's common (in your opinion) doesn't make it okay.

At any rate, I'm done discussing it.

Meh...I'm Catholic. Then again, I'm Polish and Irish, and am usually at least vaguely amused by Polish and Irish jokes.

: thanks for responding. It is so annoying when even the most otherwise politically correct person will be so offensive about the Catholic church.

Thought of another.

This isn't a "closet" one, but is stolen from a friend of my husband's....

If you can get a cardboard box...cut a hole in it for your head, paint it brown, or drape a table cloth over it (with a hole for your head). Put a photo frame or vase or candy dish or something on it (glue it down). Wear a lamp shade on your head.

You're an end table.

And wear in public?

I had a friend who went as a box of Franzia wine one year.

She had the actual "sack" of wine taped inside of a big box with head and arm holes with tap for others to partake.

I have my uniform from high school still, so I've been a catholic school girl a time or two : My brother even borrowed it once.

I've also been a bunny for relatively cheap. Ears, a carrot or two and dress in white.

With winter garb...a ski instructor?

Depending on your wardrobe, you might be able to pull off the "hippie" look easily.

You could very simply make a toga and become a Roman.
Use an old white sheet or some leftover material to make a toga and decorate it a bit with embroidery if you have a sewing machine that will do that. With some leftover leaves and stems from silk flowers you could make a wreath of laurel leaves.

Also, I remember two very different & interesting costumes from a church Halloween party. One friend went as Jonah. He wore old clothes and sprayed spray foam onto his clothes as well as bits of kernelled corn and various other items to show he'd been in the belly of the whale. His hair was a mess and he'd drawn on a fake beard too.

And our pastor at the time simply wore a bandage on his thumb. When I asked him why he didn't dress up he said was Paul who had been given a thorn in his flesh.

With a box of blank name-tag stickers, I wrote a bunch of misspoken phrases, like:

"can I have two nipples for a dime" (instead of "nickels")

Then I stuck the stickers all over my black dress slip (that I already had) and went as a Freudian Slip. Won most original costume at the party.

Also, if you have your wedding dress (presuming you have one--I don't) you could go as a bride.

Really. People shouldn't take things so seriously, least of all someone else's take on their religion. Religion isn't about what other people think of your relationship with your higher power, it's about what YOU think about your relationship with your higher power.

Anything is fair game when it comes to comedy, mockery, satire, etc...especially anything that takes itself too seriously.
