Another Doctor Vent

I have an outer ear infection and broke down and went to the doctor.....of course when I told him I was breastfeeding he acted like I was just trying to complicate things for him:
Together, he and my daughters ped. (they work in same practice) tell me to stop bf this week and give DD formula so I can take some super strong antibiotic. Like it will be that easy to suddenly give a bottle of formula to a 7mo who has only EVER had mommy's breast. Even if she would take a bottle she would not understand being denied the breast at night, etc. I just don't understand how they can so quickly think formula is the answer to everything. Oh, baby can't have this so give her a bottle! DH says we need a new doc....I agree!
Thanks for letting me vent

Several people here have a copy of Dr Hales guide to medications when breastfeeding, if I remember correctly. If you post the name of the med they want you to take, I'm sure you'll be able to find out if it really shouldn't be taken while breastfeeding. Most likely, it will turn out to be the same type of med they would give a child as well, and you'll be fine.

I agree on looking for a new doc, though. Unless you're comfortable with lying to them about not nursing for the week.

Sorry you have to go through this.

Check this site out, you should be able to look up the antibiotic they're recommending or find a resource to help. I am sure you can find an antibiotic that's safe during breastfeeding.

I agree, find a new doc and tell the old ones why they're morons on the way out the door. Ask them to read the kellymom site; they may learn something. Ask them if they have a single freaking clue of the health risks posed to your dd from early weaning, which is what a week of formula feeding would most likely do. :

Thanks everybody....these are my concerns exactly. To expect a 7 mo to just accept a bottle of formula when she has never even seen either is ridiculous....and even if she did she is not about to give up mommy! Her ped. says he is pro- bf but this is the same man who told me I "HAD" to start solids at 6 mo. I just don't get it. I told them both...my doc and ped....that it wouldn't work....to perhaps give me something else and they act like I'm crazy. Plus the reaction I got when I told him I was bf in the first place...he slapped his pen down and said he didn't have a lot of experience with that: Well guess what...I DO so listen to me!!
I get so tired of people acting like bf is abnormal or something...especially docs.
They don't care that I would still have to pump to keep up my supply and neither one even thought twice about DD....just who do they think I'm bfing?!
But here I go venting again....

Those are some very bad, ignorant docs.

Kids get amoxicillin for ear infections. Why not prescribe you that?

Or do as I do, don't do antibiotics, get some garlic and mullein oil, put that in yr ear canal twice a day (my dd and I get swimmers ear). Take multi-vits, extra C, and echinacea and golden seal. Rest, drink tons of water. Take Motrin or something for pain. In 2-3 days, this does the trick for us, no antibiotics messing up our eco-system (ie in our gut, or in the world at large!).

Just recced this to another mom:

Or just try drops of your own breastmilk in the ear, it is said to be a great cure. Oh and warm olive oil and garlic in the ear helps too!
