waiting on the placenta....

I just gave birth 2 days ago to a wonderful baby girl. I had am amazingly good hospital experience with a very hands off nurse/ob who totally respected my wishes in every way. I have no interventions *at all* - no monitoring, no iv, no heplock, nothing...

After she was born (on the floor LOL!) I moved to the bed to deliver the placenta. She had a very short cord, and took us by suprise being born on the floor (I was walking back from the bathroom) so I allowed for them to cut the cord so that I could get up.

Anyway, she was born at 8:58am. The placenta was not 'loose' at all so they allowed me to hang out and wait for it to come out. We ended up waiting 6 HOURS. During that time they would just come in and check on me periodically and do a very little 'tug' to see if it was loosening. And then gently rub my uterus to try and work it loose. I also nursed and used a breastpump during that time to get come more contractions to come on.

I felt fine the whole time, and was not bleeding. THe only pain was during the crampy/contractions from the pump or nursing.

I was however growning very concerned. I finally had to ask that the dr. come back and check on me. THe final time she came in she offered that if it did not come out we would try a shot of pitocen in the leg, and if that didn't work worst case senerio I would need a D&C...which I had assumed.

During that final check she gave a very light tug and asked me to push and I could finally push it out (other attempts to push it out prior didn't seem to make it budge at all, I could not feel anything moving)

It came out fully intact, with no problems. I then showered and was relesed to go home : )

I was SHOCKED that they allowed me to wait that whole time with no intervention. ANd in some ways feel like they may have 'forgotton' that I was in there waiting for it to come out (as I was the one who called for checks every 1-2 hours) Was there any reason for concern? Is that really unusual for it to take that long? Was there any risk to just waiting like I did?

It sounds like it all went really well. Congrats on the birth of your baby! With a placenta that doesn't want to come, it is good to just wait for it unless there is a problem such as a hemorrhage or signs of an infection starting.

Honestly, I am shocked that they would wait more than 10 minutes in a hospital setting. Usually, they doctor or midwife starts tugging on it and pulling it out within minutes of birth.

Our approach is to wait until the placenta comes on it's own, as long as mom isn't bleeding. Though, my bet would be that it had spontaneously separated shortly after the birth, and was just sitting in the lower part of the uterus.

Were you sitting down the whole 6 hours (after you moved up to the bed, of course)? Generally, if the placenta is taking a while to come (over an hour or so) and the mom is wanting to get it out, we will ask her to get upright standing or squatting, or to go and sit on the toilet, and to give a tug herself to the cord during a contraction. Of course, this is assuming we have noticed signs of separation (cord lengthening, separation gush, fundus at the umbilicus and different shaped).
