Run a vaporizer in his room while he sleeps to help break it up so he can cough it up better (I use Vicks Vaposteam in ours). Also steam is good. I usually just end up running a hot shower for awhile and sitting in the bathroom with my son, but I know there are more environmental ways of doing it. Even just sitting near the vaporizer for awhile would help.

When my oldest son was a baby he started getting croup. When we were in the hospital the nurse suggested that we put a pillow under his belly and lay him on his belly. So he was kind of at a V angle. Then cup your hand and lightly clap your hand on his back. Then gravity helps get the phlegm (sp?) out.
