I'm FED UP with the stink!!! - Page 2

right there with you mama - for months now. I've stripped them, both in the washer and the dishwasher, I've dried them outside, bleach, vinegar, blah blah blah and STILL the ammonia smell persists, and her inserts come out of the dryer smelling just nasty. I'm frustrated as heck! I will not give up though, she's my last one and will be potty training soon - which means that I will figure it out and get rid of the stink, right about the time she gives up her diapers, that's my luck.

How much do you use? I have some, but I thought it was only for spot treatment.

I use bacout on stinky stuff and presoak before washing. I squirt about a TB in a med/large load and let it soak on warm (keeps enzymes alive) for 15 mins or so before washing.

I have always thought that stink was caused by detergent residue

I just wanted to update this very old thread to let you all know what happened! I started soaking my dipes overnight (or for several hours) in warm water with a squirt of bacout. AND IT WORKS!!!! I haven't had stink issues since. Thank you MissMommyNiceNice and delphiniumpansy for the wonderful advice.

Yay! Bac Out helps, and so does soaking in vinegar for me.

What kind of detergent are you using? If it's a mainstream brand, even a "free & clear" one it more than likely has brightening dyes that coat the fibers and create a buildup. Bacteria LOVE that buildup and that's what is causing the stink. Strip the diapers using one teaspoon of Dawn blue liquid dish detergent. Nothing else. Wash on hot twice (once with Dawn, once with nothing), and rinse repeatedly until no bubbles.

Then switch to a 100% water soluble detergent like Charlie's Soap or Allens Naturally.

Also, try reducing the number of dipes you're washing per load. Make sure you're adding the detergent to the water then adding the diapers, so the det has a chance to fully dissolve.

Adding vinegar will help but it will NOT remove the buildup if you're using a detergent that's not 100% water soluble. The Dawn will work to remove the buildup but if the detergent is the culprit, the stink will return.

Bac Out can help but again, nothing will work permanently if it's your detergent causing the buildup.

Bleach will not remove the buildup thoroughly. Dawn will. The sun can help but again, all these things are temporary fixes until you switch detergents.

I agree with PP

I was having stink and repelling issues with my bG and I had done all of those suggestions, even the dishwasher. Nothing helped. Finally I talked to cotton babies and they said to wash them in super-hot water with 1 T of original Dawn (has to be Dawn) and rinse until you don't see suds. Then if they were dirty to begin with she said to wash them again in detergent because Dawn didn't clean them. It worked great for me. It might work on prefolds also. I have also done it on my musty sheets and mildewed towels to revive them.

Does anyone use bac-out with AIOs/FB or bumgenius? I had read that you shouldn't use it with these but they are the diapers we have decided to go with and it seems this product works really well. So just looking for experiences.

I use a squirt of bacout with our FBs from time to time. Why are you not supposed to use it?

Lola'smommy, what detergent are you using? If it's 100% water soluble, then I'd try two things:

1. Wash fewer dipes per load and see if that helps
2. Get some Simple Green (auto dept, Target) and wash an empty hot load with a tablespoon of SG (or put an old towel in with it -- I just do an empty load). This will clean your washing machine and remove any residue from old detergents or fabric softeners.

If you're not using a 100% water soluble detergent, no matter what solution you try, the stink issues will return.
