I would LOVE to cloth diaper my new upcoming babe but I have NO IDEA where to start!!

I posted also in diapering but figured I would try here too!

When I say I have no idea, I mean I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA where to start!

Please help!

I know I am probably jumping the gun (I am only about 5 weeks ) but I figured I needed to start somewhere!

TIA!

Check out diaperjungle.com. They have a lot of info.

Basically, you have a ton of options.

Cheapest route: prefolds (which are traditional diapers with more layers in the middle, secured with pins or a fastener called a Snappi) or flats (basic square of fabric, which you fold yourself) and covers.

Covers can be made of wool, fleece, or PUL (polyurethane laminate).

Medium-expensive route: fitted diapers and covers. Fitted diapers are absorbent diapers that are shaped like a disposable and fasten with velcro-type fasteners or snaps.

Most expensive: Pocket or all-in-one diapers. These are what they sound like--the diaper has both absorbency and waterproofing, so you just put it on and go. It sounds good in concept but many people (including me) do not like them because they are a PITA to wash!

Any of these things can be more cheaply made at home if you sew. I have tried them all and I like prefolds or fitted diapers with fleece and wool covers. But it really is personal; you might have to try a few things to find your diapering Zen.

Feel free to pm me for more info if you want specifics. I found a ton of information on the internet when I started cloth diapering just by entering "cloth diapers" into Yahoo.

Oh, and one more thing: if you're interested in prefolds, I bought factory seconds from clothdiaper.com for incredibly cheap and they were great. I use them all the time and they have held up very well. We've saved a ton of money by cloth diapering (although I do sew, so that helps).

Oh, yes, two more things: diapers are addictive. Cloth diapers are really cute, and for some reason many CDing parents (okay--gender stereotype alert--moms) get very into them.

And, while it took us a while to be comfortable with the cloth diapers (we started with sposies and switched when she was 6 months), I would never go back. In fact, I used sposies last week for the first time in months because my in-laws were visiting and babysitting and they weren't comfortable with the cloth diapers. My husband came home, picked up the baby, and said, "We have GOT to get you back into your real diapers." He's totally converted. (And the reason he said this was that there was a wet leak in her disposable....a problem we never have with cloth.)

So I forgot to say, go for it! You'll be happy you did, I'd be willing to bet.

I can relate. It seemed totally overwhelming to me when I wanted to switch. I had no idea where to start. Luckily, I have a friend IRL who CD's, so I could see how she did it. I also went to comfybummy.com, and they sent me some samples that I could see. I liked all the tutorials they had, and we ended up going with the standard prefold/covers. We only did that in February of this year. DS potty learned about 6 weeks later, and DD is still in them. I haven't figured out what route we'll take with the new one, but I assume we'll get some smaller prefolds/covers, because that's what I'm used to now. And I agree with mchalehm. It seems totally weird to do sposies now. we used them while we were on vacation in July, and I was actually happy to get home and get back into my routine with the cloth. That's all I can think of for now. If you have more questions, please ask.

Thanks! I mentioned to dh and he just looked at me like I was crazy! I am thinking of going the fuzzi bunz route but not sure...dh said his sister uses them (we don't talk to her often, I don't know if she likes me too much) so I guess I could suck it up and call her but I don't know...

I have read mixed reviews on them, they say they are now made in mexico so they are having sizing issues or something....all I know is I've done some research and now I think I am even MORE confused!!

Every diaper out there has good AND bad reviews...my biggest issue is my girls are REALLY heavy wetters! I am just assuming my next will be as well ...and every cloth dipe out there has mixed reviews for leaking! UGH!! I am NOT a big fan of having to change a baby in the middle of the night! Unless they poop in the middle of the night (or pee out of their diaper obviously) I DON'T change them!

So I guess I need to just get a few of each one I think I may like and go from there!

You might find that your babes are not as heavy of wetters as you think. My daughter pees right through a sposie overnight but is fine in cloth 99% of the time. The sposies are good at keeping the baby's bum dry but they don't hold as much in my experience.

I have heard many negative comments about FuzziBunz but I have not tried them myself. I can tell you that pockets in general were annoying to me. I hate stuffing them. But many mamas love them. My favorite diaper is always a fitted with a cover, though, so I've definitely settled on my bias and I'm sticking to it!

One thing you might want--and one thing I've been SO glad that I spent the money on--is a diaper sprayer. It hooks up to the plumbing behind your toilet (I installed mine in 3 minutes; very easy) and it's basically a little mini-shower. (Some people who have a removable shower head that reaches the toilet just use that.) You can use it to spray off a poopy diaper. It's very convenient and has made me WAY more amenable to cloth diapering now that my daughter is eating solid food and producing much more disgusting diapers.

We never used disposables; not even on trips/vacations. For the first two-three months, when my son was in small sizes, we used infant prefolds with Snappis and covers, and had a few AIOs for when we were out. Once he got bigger, we diversified: Mother-Ease one-size fitteds (we had those from the beginning, but they did not fit until he reached about 12-14 pounds), various pockets, various AIOs and larger prefolds.

Personally, I think pockets are the worst diapers - we have a sampling of six brands (Apron Strings, Ella's Pockets, Fuzzibunz, Happy Heiny, Swaddlebees and Wonderoos/Wonderworks - which now seem to have become "Haute Pockets") - except for the Swaddlebees, which we used rarely, NONE were worth the money, because the elastic wore out (sometimes with less than 10 uses!) and needs to be replaced. The Ella's Pocket held up a little longer than the other brands, but the elastic eventually deteriorated too. I don't even have a dryer, and most of the time, the water in my washing machine doesn't even get hot, so it certainly was not from an abusive wash routine. However, it seems i am the only person who has had such bad luck with pockets; the rest of the cloth diapering world seems to be crazy about them.

The AIOs (we have Blue Penguin, Bumkins, Kushies, Mother-Ease, Pro-raps, and Rumpsters) and the Mother-Ease have held up fine with far greater usage - no deteriorating elastic or other visible damage.

There is a lot of information available about cloth diapers on-line. However, if you are looking for recommendations, I suggest prefolds and covers with a few AIOs for the newborn stage; then maybe get a few fitteds too for later on, plus wool soakers/longies for nighttime.

I've never bought from jardinediapers.com, but they have detailed descriptions of many different diapers with absorbency ratings - very useful.

I am in the same boat. I really want to cloth diaper although everyone in my family is against it but I dont care. But I dont know where to even start or what kinds I will even want to invest in

It is overwhelming at first when you start looking into cloth choices, but after reading for awhile and trying a few you can easily figure out what works best for you and your child.

I just taught a class on cloth diapering at a La Leche League enrichment meeting. LLL does not have an officialy stance on cloth diapering, but you will often find some moms that attend LLL that also cloth diaper. Its a great way to meet people with common interests and get to check out cloth diapers in person.

I use cloth on my youngest son, half of his stash is BlueBerry Pocket Diapers and the other half is prefolds and covers. His school and my dh prefer the pockets for ease of use. I like both and PFs are cheaper so it is nice to round out a stash with them. I tried a variety of diapers before settling on what we have. I'd recommend not buying a complete set of one type of diaper until you have a child to use them on and get a sense of what you really like.

You are right, they all have their pros & cons, it is just a matter of figuring out what is the most important aspect to you. As far as leaking goes, that can be fixed by adding a doubler, or using hemp stuffings, and/or different cover options. I find that leaks occur if the baby isn't changed often anough or if the diaper size is not the right fit.

I have used FuzziBunz off and on and they have never been my favorite. My husband dislikes the way they snap (says its too hard for him to figure out.) I prefer side snapping diapers.

Have fun shopping and researching! There's plenty of time before you need to use them. I plan on building my newborn stash out of second-quality fitteds and second-hand items from FSOT boards. My boys were both a little over 6 #s at birth and stayed smaller for awhile so I don't plan on spending much on the size the baby will grow out of the fastest.

http://www.thestorkwearhouse.com/getstarted.htm
has a decent overview of your options (I don't know anything about the site otherwise, haven't purchased anything there).

My son is a terribly heavy wetter- he does most of his nursing (and peeing) at night. We finally figured out how to go without changes overnight: we take a pocket diaper stuffed with two prefolds and an insert, and then use a wool cover on top of that to catch any leaks. It's HUGE, but it works wonderfully at taking a whole night's worth of pee, and the fleece lining keeps him feeling dry enough to stay asleep.

We did prefolds with Bummi's covers for most of the first year, now we've added in some Mommy's Touch pocket diapers. I'll probably buy more of the Mommy's Touch for the new babe.

Edited to add: Gah, somewhere I have a link to a place that does a trial package rental- for $100 they'll send you a bunch of different types of diapers to try for a month or so, then you can return them and get $90 of that back. I'll try to find it later.

I have to say we love our Fuzzi Bunz. DS has been in mediums since 5months, he's now 27 months, and they are just now starting to wear out. We tried other brands(Bumkins, Happy Heiny's, prefolds and covers) and FB just worked best for us. It really is a trial and error thing. DF hasnt touched a diaper since DS was born(for various reasons) but he will be this time around. I absolutely love cloth, would never go back. Occasionally we do use sposies(seventh generation, of course) if we go camping(we camp in the rough and its just not very conductive to cloth) and I hate them!!!!They just dont do as well as the cloth.

Thanks everyone for all your input. I REALLY appreciate it! I am thinking of going with kissaluvs fitteds with covers and then once he/she gets to be 2-3 mos. switching over to FB. I know my dh's sister used to use FB, so I went online to try and research them and it seems that since they are now being made in Mexico instead of the USA, there are a LOT of complaints about them so I am not sure.

Thanks Jenn for the website! I think i'll go that route and just get several more kissaluvs on top of it.....they seem to be the most liked CD for newborns.

Thanks again!

Does anyone have an opinion on the g diapers?

My sister is due at the end of December and I was thinking about getting her the trial pack as a baby shower gift... and they were good getting them for myself later!
There have been lots of threads about the g diapers on MDC but I'm not sure how you would search for them. Most of what I read was not very positive. Some families have had problems with the flushables clogging the plumbing.

I have never used the flushables; however, we have a few of the g diapers covers. I like them. They're not holding up that well, but they were pretty cheap! I like the fit a lot, though, for holding a trifolded prefold. I don't use the plastic liner--just the PUL pants.

I made some fleece covers that were modeled on the g diapers covers and I love them. They are among my favorites now (especially since I could use snaps instead of velcro...big improvement).

G diapers just changed their covers - they are no longer made of PUL, now they are cotton/spandex. So the polyester/polyurethane liner will have to be used in order for it to be waterproof. I don't know, but it seems to me that they may not have been too happy about cloth diaper users buying the old PUL g pants to use as covers - it won't be possible to use cotton/spandex g pants as covers.

I have a lot of friends who cloth diaper and try to convert me on a regular basis. I wish i had done it from the beginning now that i am having my fifth baby!! Hidsight is 20/20!!

One question, I have tons of laundry. i am not good at keeping up with it and always have clean and dirty clothes EVERYWHERE!!! How do I handle my normal laundry jungle and add in cloth diapers. I think this is my biggest stumbling block over the past couple of babies.

I was horrible about keeping up with laundry until we starting using cloth diapers. Now I *have* to do a load at least twice a week....and so I just toss the rest of the clothes in with. Yucky? Maybe, but if the dipes are coming out clean, so are the clothes, right?

Another CD-er here. We started when DD was 10 months old. She's 29 months now, and I'm hoping she'll be PLed by the time the new baby comes. We use mainly pockets with her.

I'm planning on just doing PFs and covers in the NB stage. You change them so frequently whether they are in cloth or sposies at that point, and they grow out of things so quickly, I just don't see the point in investing in anything more expensive than PFs. I do have some fitteds that I've purchased on sale here and there, for trips out and such. Once the baby is 6 or 7 months old and the growth levels off, I'll probably go back to pockets.

DITTO DITTO DITTO to the diaper sprayer suggestion. I think that was what finally sold my DH on CDing. He had memories of swishing dirty PFs in the toilet back in the day, LOL.

Once you get your system down, it's pretty easy. And much easier to throw in a load of diapers than trek out to the store for more sposies
