We never used disposables; not even on trips/vacations. For the first two-three months, when my son was in small sizes, we used infant prefolds with Snappis and covers, and had a few AIOs for when we were out. Once he got bigger, we diversified: Mother-Ease one-size fitteds (we had those from the beginning, but they did not fit until he reached about 12-14 pounds), various pockets, various AIOs and larger prefolds.
Personally, I think pockets are the worst diapers - we have a sampling of six brands (Apron Strings, Ella's Pockets, Fuzzibunz, Happy Heiny, Swaddlebees and Wonderoos/Wonderworks - which now seem to have become "Haute Pockets") - except for the Swaddlebees, which we used rarely, NONE were worth the money, because the elastic wore out (sometimes with less than 10 uses!) and needs to be replaced. The Ella's Pocket held up a little longer than the other brands, but the elastic eventually deteriorated too. I don't even have a dryer, and most of the time, the water in my washing machine doesn't even get hot, so it certainly was not from an abusive wash routine. However, it seems i am the only person who has had such bad luck with pockets; the rest of the cloth diapering world seems to be crazy about them.
The AIOs (we have Blue Penguin, Bumkins, Kushies, Mother-Ease, Pro-raps, and Rumpsters) and the Mother-Ease have held up fine with far greater usage - no deteriorating elastic or other visible damage.
There is a lot of information available about cloth diapers on-line. However, if you are looking for recommendations, I suggest prefolds and covers with a few AIOs for the newborn stage; then maybe get a few fitteds too for later on, plus wool soakers/longies for nighttime.
I've never bought from jardinediapers.com, but they have detailed descriptions of many different diapers with absorbency ratings - very useful.
