I am completely addicted to CDing! 
I started when my ds was 3 months old.
We have prefolds and fitteds, which you need a cover for (or not if he's just wearing the dipe like in the summer). For covers I used mostly wool longies or wook interlock pants. I also have some interlock soakers that I can use under "real" clothes.
We also have a stash of BumGenius AIOS and Fuzzi Bunz (pockets). He's outgrowing the BGs since they are all mediums (the onces we started with 10 months ago!) but Fuzzi Bunz is having a year end clearance now and almost every store that is carrying them is offereing them at at least 20% off. We wear these at night, double or tripled stuffed with either hemp trifold inserts or the microterry insert they come with.
You'll want to buy a few of each and see what works for you. I wash about 5 times a week. If you stuff too many into the washing machine they won't clean well. So I have a small lidded pail and when it's to the top I wash them. I hang the diapers but dryer the inserts and prefolds.
For this baby, I already bought 20 Kissaluvs fitteds and some small FBs, I need to get a few covers and decide what other XS or S's we'll need. It's hard not knowing what size he/she will be when born -
