BIG LOTS has portable spas!

I don't know if any of you would be as excited about this as I am, but I provide a pool kit to my clients and have been waiting for the day when I can do something more than the La Bassanine pool. The one I found at Big Lots today has jets, a heater, and a locking cover but is still inflatable and small enough when deflated to fit into a large rubbermaid container. I'm definitely getting one, but may get two or three to rent to homebirth clients using other midwives.

It's $429.99, which is less than half of what I've seen elsewhere.

I would be intrusted to see it. Anyone you know of used something of that order?

Get it! That sounds just like the spa/hot tub I had my second son in a few months ago and it was amazing. It was big and deep enough that I could be really buoyant and it had large, firm (inflatable) sides that were very comfortable and supportive. My husband got in with me once I hit transition and it was lovely having him right there for counter-pressure and to catch the baby.

It's a big investment, so if you want to pm me you email address I'll send you a picture and you can see if it's the same type of spa. If it is, I would absolutely go for it.

huh. There's a big lots around here, I wonder if they have the same stuff?...i'll have to check it out!

My only concern about these is how to clean and sanatize the jets...it seems it would be difficult. A throw away liner couldn't be used because then the jets wouldn't work. Just wondering what you would do. I know in our home spa you can't use many products through the jets including things like bath salts. Maybe this is different though.

Aw! I just called my local story and the woman said that they sold out the first day they had them!

BTW, I would assume you clean them the same way you do with a home tub spa. Empty and refil with water and bleach up to the jets and run. A

Although, I do not know how the bleaching would effect the system over the long run.

GirrlyElizabeth, how does your midwife keep it clean?

Charmie981 says: our big lots has three and the one i checked in a town over has 4. I'd gladly buy some for you ladies and ship them. I'm guessing it'd be $50 or so to ship. PM me (at Charmie981!) if you want to work out the details.

I think the woman I rented it from does what you suggested -- fills it, adds a little bleach, runs the jets. I was the first person to use it, and when we did our trial run with it I added a small amount of hibicleanse as well as a small amount of bleach. Rinsing it was crazy, thanks to the bubbly hibicleanse, so I'd recommend being very conservative with that stuff!

I trained in a birth center that used a softub. We cleaned the pool with spray cleaner (Clorox Clean Up, I think), then changed the filter, then filled it up, added a little pool chlorine, and ran the jets. For the water to be at temperature, you have to have this specific pool up for 24 hours (if filled with cold water). I think the solution would be for the kit to include a test kit and some chlorine granules, but I haven't looked at the directions yet about chlorine. I'm sure any chemical designed to keep a spa clean would work and would be safe as long as it was used in the lowest concentration possible.

We also didn't allow the jets to be on during pushing because of the risk of sucking up...well...we won't go there. Suffice to say, we always turned it off around that time and I think it was probably a pretty good policy. :

I found one...it's at the second closest store so I am off tomorrow to check it out.

Charolette, thanks for the heads up!

And everyone, thanks for the cleaning tips!
