so they do push for adults to get vaxed

I know one of the arguments I always use about fear of the unvaxed child, is that if people are scared of unvaxed kids, they should also fear all the adults who didn't get vaxed because the vax didn't exist, the adults whose vax immunity has worn off, etc.

Now, I see this as an ad on a web page I was on http://www.doitforyourbaby.com/index...l_online_media

Grrrrr!

Oh, don't get me started on the pushing of the tetanus shot! A couple years ago, DH cut his hand on some metal on our truck (not rusty metal, just a sharp piece). He went to the medi-clinic because he thought he might need stitches and they told him he needed a tetanus shot, and he got it!! And his cut had been bleeding like crazy for over an hour. GRRRRRRRR!

I told him that next time he must refuse. Then he can talk to me, or research himself as he can always get it later if he decides to. And now I always bug him every time he scratches himself...."oh honey, do you want to go to the ER and get a tetanus shot?".

You'd think a guy who agrees to not vaxing the kids would know enough to not get a vax for himself....:

We were pressured about the flu shot when dd was about 6 weeks old, by a pediatric infectious disease specialist. (long story as to why we were there) And it was January! He was stunned that I didn't get one while pregnant and that Dh teaches public school and didn't get one. He said "please please consider it - it's your only way to protect her." :

Yep I got pressure about the DTaP at my physical a year or so back. Dr was trying to convince me that I was a threat to my baby if I didn't get the vax.

Of course I didn't get one. What a load of crap.

Or handwashing. But that makes sense, since he's a doc.

I got hit by a Ford F250 last year in the crosswalk in the Walmart parking lot (karma? ) I went to Immediate Care to get checked out & the nurse insisted that I NEEDED a tetnus shot b/c I didn;t know when my last one was nad I would DIE without it b/c "there is no treament for tetanus". I wasn't even cut, I had been hit by a truck! How do you get tetanus from being hit by a truck if you haven't even been cut? : Imagine his shock when I said "That's crap. And besides, we don't do vaccines." He said, "Not any?" I told him, "Nope none, not a single one. And for the record, if a wound bleeds tetanus isn't an issue anyway." So there.

Oh, and I got a notice from the university I attend telling me that I had to get up-to-date on my boosters or I would be disenrolled and have a hold put on my account for both financial aid & registration. I called and asked where to get an exemption form & they had no idea what I was talking about. I asked to speak to the surpervisor who told me that he would "look into it". Three days later they call & tell me that I can now get one in the Admissions & Records office. So I went down there & signed the exemption, and they left me alone after that.

Last week one of our employees went to the urgent care b/c he had a SCRATCH from VELCRO on his nose nad it was getting really infected. The insisted he needed a tetnus shot. When his wife called to tell us he was sick and had to get this tetnus shot, plus an antibiotic shot I couldn't believe it. I mean, I'd understand if it were a cut from metal or a nail, but a scratch from velco (on his gloves), that's crazy!

I wonder what the rates of adults being vaxed are? How many are acutally "fully covered", not to mention children? I'm sure that actual numbers (which are probably impossible to tell accurately anyhow, since there is no way of surveying the entire population) are far fewer than what many health professionals think. Hm.

I've seen the 'do it for the babies' ,'who will you do it for' propaganda it really irks me.:

I had a patient a few years ago who got cut from her airbag exploding in a car accident, and was given a tetanus shot after that.... I seriously had to sit down and ask her to repeat the story.... ummm... tetanus spores aren't exactly known to thrive in an airbag, but that could be just me being practical and all....

I have gotten that from our family dr. I went in for a physical and she really layed it on thick that since we were foster parents, I should REALLY get the new vax for pertussis. She said it was very common now

She knows I have autoimmune issues.....grrrr

Not to mention all these people getting tetanus shots post-injury received no present benefit from them and needed the immunoglobulin instead . . .

I thought a regular shot was fine under certain conditions? i.e. that you've had the full series initially, or something like that

It's my understanding that the regular shot will not be helpful in dealing with a potential current problem . . . of course, most of these examples are people who are not up-to-date on their DTaP. But it was several months ago I read the protocols online. Maybe I can find them again.

This link: http://www.nmhct.nhs.uk/pharmacy/protocol-tetanus.html is what I was thinking of.

It doesn't say that the regular shot is of any benefit for the present injury . . . seems more that the point is if the person has a very low-risk wound AND is not up-to-date on the tetanus vaccination, that now is a great time to get them re-vaccinated or vaccinated for the first time. Not that it is of any benefit if there actually is a contaminated wound. If there's any real danger of infection, the immunoglobulin is given, although it's listed as optional for those deemed to be immune (i.e. up to date on the shot).

Without more information, I don't think the regular tetanus shot is giving any benefit to the patient for a new wound. Immunoglobulin is recommended for any potentially non-immune patient who has a tetanus-prone wound. Feel free to disagree since it isn't explicit, but this is my take on it.

LOL if it did, I would have been dead by now, when I was in an accident two years ago and the airbag cut me...

That was the craziest part. Of every MD we encountered during our Children's hospital experience, he was absolutely the biggest breastfeeding advocate! He talked it up all the time, including supporting nursing in public - and always had a bf advocacy buttons on his coat.
