Cold weather smoothie replacement ideas

Thread Starter
My DH is a cyclist and I make him a smoothie after each ride of raw milk, CO, honey, ass't fruit and his yucky powdered whey product (that I do not approve of). As the weather is getting cold, he is not enjoying his smoothies because they make him even colder! I suggested a nice warm soup that I could hide his nasty whey powder in. I was thinking of a creamy type soup with coconut oil/milk, broth, some sort of pureed veggie and his whey.
Anyone have a recipe that might work or any thoughts on this project of mine?
Thanks!

One thing that comes to mind here is making gruel and using it warm as your smoothie base. It's basically oatmeal (or some other grain) with way too much water so it's really runny.

So he can still drink it, but it won't be a cold treat.

I'd go with something along the lines of "hot cocoa" but healthier. What if you made him a "hot smoothie" in the blender- same stuff as before but use hot water in place of the ice?

I've actually cooked a grated sweet potato in with coconut milk before and took a hand blender to that to make a warm smoothie. I just added all of my other normal smoothie ingredients before blending.

not to hijack...but you need one of those stick blenders to do this, right? isn't putting hot things in the regular blender a no-no?

i LVOE the ideas. dh has a smoothie (or milkshake, as he calls it) every morning but i would love to make something warm and if i can hide oatmeal in it, even better!

about the op, could you just put the milk, CO and whey powder and fruit into a hot bowel of oatmeal? if you make it really thick with water, you could add th emilk to thin it out after cooking, that way the milk doesnt' get to hot. dh loves to add milk like that to his oatmeal.

Here's a recipe from a candida support yahoo group (Bee's group). It appears to get a lot of positive reviews. It is suggested for both breakfast (usually listed for hot), and an afternoon snack (usually cold).

1. 3 raw large whole eggs (or 4 medium), preferably “certified organic” free-range

2. 2 tablespoons coconut oil

3. 2 tablespoons butter (organic or certified organic cultured & unsalted is best)

4. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste

5. 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, or to taste

6. 1 pinch of stevia sweetener, or to taste

7. 2 – 2 ½ cups of boiled filtered water

Put the first 6 ingredients in a blender and add boiled water last. Close the cover well, and blend.

Some people like this drink hot, while others prefer it cold.

All ingredients can be adjusted to suit individual needs. For example if you are just starting on coconut oil add 1 teaspoon and gradually increase the amount over time (every 4-5 days) to minimize die-off reactions. The number of eggs can be increased or decreased, along with any other ingredients.

I make warm smoothies with all the regular ingredients (fruit- but I omit organic yogurt for the warm ones) and then I use steeped organic (loose leaf) green tea or yerba mate for the fluid portion. I don't know which would be better for hiding nasty whey powder , but everyone here loves a winter smoothie made with either of these. Oh, and I always add a small handful of dates- they make it so yummy! And vanilla scraped from the bean! Mmmmm, I'm too pg to be writing about this at this hour- I don't have the energy to make it, but I do have the ability to drool...

Our blender is glass and metal in the canister portion, so I don't think heat matters as much- the warning is about taking the lid off and having everything explode out of the canister, but our lid has a removable cap in the centre, so I just blend with it ajar so steam can escape and I've never had a problem. I imagine a blender with plastic parts might leach plastic into the food, or just melt; I don't know; I've never tried it. Handheld blenders are plastic too though, aren't they?
