May 2007 Mamas ~ It's November! - Page 5

Amy~ It is quite a confusing topic. It gets most of us : before we figure it out.

Emily~ Why aren't we supposed to put MF against baby's skin? I have only used my pockets (swaddlebees) as pockets. I like them. I rotate between swaddlebee pockets, bumkins AIOs & prefolds. I'm suprised at how much I'm liking prefolds.

Ugh-- money issues-- whoever brought that up-- MSAX. I'm reeeling with a recent DH purchace. Then a window breaks. . .wait wait-- DH BREAKS A WINDOW and that opens up a $500 can of worms.

Not sure if you have house insurance or if it would work the same as mine here but we are allowed one claim every X years (5 I think) without it affecting our premiums and our deductible is less than $500. Might want to look into it?

Diapers: I mke my own pockets and I agree that they dry a whole lot faster than AIOs. I also make my own prefolds and find them to be so easy to use, I prefer them to the pockets most of the time, but the pockets have a layer of fleece to keep baby dry and I can double up on the soaker if were going to be out and about.

My DH loooves FuzziBunz...he doesn't mind prefolds either, which is what we mostly use during the day, but if he had to choose, that's all he'd use. Lately, I've been finding it difficult to get the right fit with leg snaps and the waist snaps. We also just got a Bum Genius 2.0 (they're all on clearance right now because the 3.0 is coming out later this year) and I love it! It's also good for newborn to 35 lbs. or so, and very adjustable. A little pricier ($14.95 on sale), but will last a long time, I think.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure I just saw some FBs for sale on diaper swappers for $10 each. That's where I get most of my diapers, too.

CDs real fast: we use prefolds & covers during the day because it's SO CHEAP (i.e. 12 prefolds for $30 plus covers are about $13 each, but reusable unless soiled) but Bunz at night for dryness against skin. I actually prefer Drybees to FB b/c I prefer the Velcro snaps to the button snaps b/c she tends to be fussy when I'm dressing her for bed and the velcro is faster

i've used fitteds for years but just recently started looking into getting a few FBs. i honestly think i'm getting tired of CDing & need to spice it up a bit. i just ordered some procion dyes from dharma trading co. to dye my kissaluvs & give them some new life. i have some brand new premium pf's that i'm going to tie dye, as well. if that turns out i'll probably sell them & get some FBs.

ezra is hilarious with his attempts to crawl. he ends of doing "downward facing dog" most of the time because he can't figure out to maneuver his knees so he just straightens them. it's too funny! i truly can't wait until he can crawl.....he'll be so much happier. the frustration is getting to him & i just know he sees the possibilities!

Yeah, microfiber is so absorbent it can actually pull moisture out of skin and can cause dryness and possible rash. Now, that is more a problem with ECers whose babies are in dry diapers more often than not, but still. Wet microfiber wouldn't have that issue. LOL I am still using some disposables from when we were traveling and because I'm a laundry slacker with a capital S and am getting more and more grossed out by them. I think by the time I'm done with the pack, I'll be sufficiently disgusted to avoid them until we're traveling again. LOL I am so humbled from my high and mighty Delia-only-wore-20-disposables-in-her-entire-life stance since having another. It's good for my sometimes out of control too-high self esteem.

Back to work for me. Today has been so long and I've been so productive! We forgot about turning the clocks back, and I returned from the grocery store wehre the bag boy mentioned it - as I walked IN the door with the kids and groceries it was 9:30 AM!!! That is like, usually the time I start thinking about getting dressed if I even am out of bed. It feels like midnight and it's only 10 PM! I need a little more caffeine!!

Oh - home insurance. We've gotta call our guy this week and see if we should file a claim. Our deductible is $500, but if it's all covered I think it'll be worth it to file a claim for my husband's old records that were ruined, to have the basement floor stripped and repainted hopefully with something that won't come up if it gets wet again, and we might need to replace a rug too.

I am just ignoring the whole other house we have that is still totally dirty, still has lots of our stuff in the backyard and shed, and doesn't have water or electricity so it's going to be hard to clean it and get it rented or put on the market! OK - going back to ignoring that now...

I may be coming over the dark side (ie cloth diapers). My friend uses Fuzie Bunz and she let me try a few and I have to tell you that both DH and I really liked them. Elise seems to like them too. I have had to promise DH that I'd do better in the laundry dept in order to do this so my question for you wise Mama's is....Is there a better diaper than the Fuzie Bunz? I REALLY like the snap things and the ease of the ones she gave me. Also are they all this expensive (13.95 a piece right now)? And how many do you need? Oh, and no wool b/c DD1 has wool issues so I don't want to chance them w/ Elise.

Thanks so much.
:

I've been looking into getting FB too.

Your adventure sounds FUN Firemomma! Ah Vegas :

I love the time change..... Kashi and I went to bed early and now I am up with the sun and ready to have a productive morning as well...

And I love fall.... the chill in the air and the leaves and the winding down. I feel really good right now.

DH congratulated me and then we made a pact to quit eating junk food again (potato chips especially) because I still have 20lbs or so to lose before I am at a truly healthy weight and I want to be there before we have another baby (yes, it's a topic of discussion around here, but it'll be another 10-14 months before we go there I think).
That's great! It's a great feeling huh? I never got back to my original size after DD, but I did this time. My hips widened too much.

amyleigh~ i hope everything turns out ok.

Diapers~we are using pfs and mostly thirsties covers. I have some aios too. I really like pfs and they are so cheap! I couldn't put out $14 a diaper, it was just too much. I'm surprised at how easy it is for me to cd.

Maybe I should just go buy me a pack of prefolds and covers, and get some FB little by little on here.

Anyone have opinion on Bumkins? (I think that is what they are called)

The Bumkins AIOs take FOREVER to dry. The Bumkins covers are great, though I think Bummis Super Whisper Wraps wash/wear better and have a higher re-sale value.

I also just responded to the request for FBs on the TP. PM me if interested :.

I agree! BSWW can often be found for about $5 on the TP and they last forever! I sent my S and M from ds1 to Mali with a friend and she said they were going strong for the village women 2 years later (after many kids).

Bumkins Covers vs. Bummis SWW:
- our NB size covers were Bumkins (camo, baby!) and they were good b/c they were more plastic-y than the Bummis so even if they got pooped on, you could handwash them easily; h/e I find soiled Bummis pretty much need to be machine washed, and take a few washes for stains to come out
- however, our Bumkins covers were really stiff when we got them new and the velcro tabs were rough on baby's skin. They got softer after about a half dozen or more washings.
- As she got a bit bigger, the really tight elastics around the legs of the Bumkins were leaving pretty nasty red marks on baby

Conclusion: when I order size M covers, I'm going to get a few Bummis and a few Bumkins since they both have advantages and disadvantages

My other covers were custom ones from WiggleWormBottoms which I <3 !

Hehe, pre-baby I wondered how do people end up with baby carrier collections, um, I've a sling, a borrowed OtSBH, a Mei Tai I'm thinking of redoing the straps or selling, it's really pretty, but I've been using my BabyTrekker way more, a Snugli my mom got me and I don't really like, and I bought gorgeous Chinese brocade for making a sling.

Henry just ate some apple! I gave him 1/4 piece with the skin cut off and just let him gnaw at it. He got off quite a bit of it, and really enjoyed it. Fun!

You can get by with fewer of them by using them like covers during the day and putting prefolds in them but on top of the fleece, so the fleece doesn't even get wet. Then you just replace the prefold
Elisabeth did the inhale huuuuh! thing all day but only one day, had me spazzing that she couldn't breathe. Paranoid mama me!

She loves apples and pears!

Thanks so much for the idea, I have 10 nb pfs from same MDC friend as above. likes the FBs way better than pfs for leakage, well, me to he likes that they're easier too.

Congratulations, Kristen! That is so nice to pull out clothes you haven't worn in a while. Kinda like old friends.

Warning: About to go completely off topic.

Is it just me or does it seem terribly early for the onslaught of Christmas stuff! Todd and I were tripping out on the anxiety that seems to loom over this time of year (esp now because everyone wants Akasha around but we are skipping town...). On a particularly sleep deprived evening last week, we came up with this little ditty. So for all you fans of the neck cheese song, here it is: (please just forgive us if this offends you)

Santa Claus is coming to town (the irreverent Elihu family version)

He's making a list
He's checking it twice
He's breathing down your neck
so you better do right
Santa Claus is coming to town.

He's staking you out
He's tapping your phone
He's hiding behind bushes
when you think you're alone
Santa Claus is coming to town.

You may believe in Santa
but don't you take the bait,
He was made up by Macys and Sears in 1928! Ooooooh!

Poor Akasha...
We really aren't total strooges, honest! We are throwing a big festive party upon our return... celebrating winter, yule log and tree and lasagna and everything We were just musing on how there's such a tone of bribes and guilt to the contemporary xmas myth.... and the consumerism... Eek! Todd's birthday falls on Dec. 25 and we aren't Christian so we don't celebrate on that day... but it's like swimming up against niagra falls lol .... Def heading for the hills....

You can also go and buy diaper flannel and either make prefolds or use flats, they really aren't that hard to fold if you fold them like a prefold. That's by far the cheapest, if you have a sewing machine and can zigzag the edges of some flannel (though a serger would be preferable) you need 1yd by 0.5yd per diaper and I can get diaper flannel as cheap as $2/yd, so that's $1 per diaper. Or you can PM me and I can make and send you some for a small additional fee They're cheap and they work.

Sorry it is a hard time of year for you baraka (and the song is funny). Having a baby certainly ups the stakes on the holidays (my MIL is coming in 3 weeks and insists we get a tree while she is here, even though I am going home on Dec 16 and dh is coming Dec22 so a tree here is useless).

That said, I am totally not religious at all but Christmas is my high holy holiday I go all out for birthdays and Christmas - I LOVE gift giving, wrapping presents, surprising people with things they love, being home at my moms house, Santa for the kids, etc! I. however, hate Thanksgiving and wish the holiday did not extists at all (thus why MIL gets Thanksgiving and we go to my mom's farm for Christmas )

(i have a custom reversible BH & a pack-pack. BH is very daddy friendly, too! ).

ezra needs a nap so i have to start walking my circuit!
How much do you want for the mei tai? I have a neice due any minute now who is clueless about everything. She is only 19. I mailed her Dr. Sears book on Thursday and told her I would get her a babywearing device whatever she wanted.

http://http://little-lions.com/page19.html Okay I come from really old school. I just used cloth diapers rubber pants and pins with my 4 kids. Then with Maggie I borrowed the proraps and cloth diapers. Wow, I cannot believe how easy those are too use. Why doesn't everyone uese cloth diapers. It is almost exactly the same as using disposables. Anyway when I had to get a bigger size I got them from the web site above. I paid extra and got the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap which I love. I have 5 wraps and 2 dozen diapers and its more then enough.

We are trying to figure out what our holiday traditions are. My mom was the spoke that held us altogether, KWIM? Then to add to everything my dh well really me is just starting to talk to his mom. We went 16 years with no communications. She finally gets it. All she had to do was say SORRY I screwed up which she finally did. Anyway, on Thanksgiving, we like to go to movies all day. In the middle of the night, I was thinking am I robbing my kids by not giving them a classic Thanksgiving holiday. Apparently our Christmas and my birthday tradition is McDonald's. Last year my mom was dying and the McDonald's by our house was open so we went there for Christmas and then on my birthday I was so depressed. I did not think it would hit me so hard, we went to McDonald's just because I did not feel like cooking. James my 15 year old says is this our family tradition McDonald's?
