How much fabric for prefold?

Thread Starter
I am wondering how many diapers standard size prefolds I can get out of one yard of fabric? I looked through 5 pages and didn't come across anything. I would love to make some bamboo prefolds but want to make sure I order enough fabric to save on shipping.

Thanks!

Hang on, there's a tutorial on making a prefold "the real way"...let me find the link

Here you go: http://diaperfabric.com/sew-a-prefol...r-the-real-way

There are measurements in the directions. I think that alot of the time, you will actually spend more to make your own prefolds (unless you buy the birdseye or diaper twill through a co-op).

There's another tutorial here: http://www.geocities.com/cyndiegran/diapertext2.html
scroll all the way down, and there are directions for making prefolds by sewing a rectangle to the center of a larger rectangle of fabric, as well as "real way" directions (but no pictures).

HTH!

I can get 1 standard size 4x8x4 prefold from a yard of 45" wide fabric. Cut 4 18" squares and follow the directions on my Dirt Cheap Diapers site!

If I had fancy fabric, I'd make a 'pocket prefold' and stuff it with not so fancy fabric- flannel, birdseye, twill, microfiber, ect. That way you don't waste your nicer stuff for the soaker part. I am making fitteds, and have organic cotton/hemp fleece to se on the inside. Instead of making 4-6 full layers of the expensive fabric, I make pocket fitteds, and just make them 2 layers-one layer oc/hemp fleece on the inside and cute flannel/woven on the outside. I leave the back open like a pocket diaper and use folded prefolds to stuff it. Or I'l sew up the back pocket and make snap in or sewn in doublers, with only the layer against babies skin being oc fleece, and the underside layers being flannel.

On diaperswappers.com, there are lots of instructions and tutorials. If you search on that site for bamboo velour pocket prefold, you'll find the mama who did hers with pics and I think with instructions. HTH!

Great website!

ETA: Wow, so if I wanted to use organic cotton, that is actually quite pricey!
