Sewing Longies

Thread Starter
I'm making a couple pairs of longies for a friend's DD out of old sweaters. She's a very tall 2yo, and neither the arms nor the body of the sweater are long enough to cover the length from ankle to waist.

So how would I piece these together, not having a single piece long enough for the whole length of the pants? Would I have to make the body and legs separate pieces? Is there some way to hide the joins somehow, without making the pants look goofy?

There are several tutorials in the second sticky for "bum sweater" longies, and I'm fairly sure one uses both the body of the sweater and the arms as well...I'll take a look

ETA (much later, sorry!): here's the one I was thinking of. You make a pair of "underwear" from the body of the sweater, and then sew on the sleeves as legs. http://www.bumwrapdiapers.com/pages/pattern.php

I made sweater pants for ds, but i didn't measure his inseam..I used the full length of the sleeve, so i ended up with really long legs and no rise.
I cut a strip from the front of the sweater sewed it into a tube and attached it to the legs...I used 3/4 of the turtle neck as along waist band...
I think they look great and they are long enough and have enough of a rise to last "hopefully" until potty training
hope I was helpful,,,sometimes our mistakes lead us to great places

Anyone Wanna Make Longies For Me??

I have a sweater i'd love to make longies out of, but I don't trust myself. Anyone do this for timid folks?

Just a side note on the same subject....
I've found that when I look for sweaters in the mens dept at the thrift store the arms are often really really big, both wide and long. (Sounds obvious I guess...) I've been mostly making smaller things as my little one will be small for the next year, but I've been keeping this tip in my mind for when I start looking for sweaters to make into her second winters wardrobe.
Good Luck, I hope it works out great for you! I'd love to hear what you come up with!

We make ours very similar to that pattern. They do look a little crazy, but man, they fit soooooo well! I find myself reaching for my longies that are this style over all of my yummy knitted longies and other recycled wool.
