What's the deal with silicone bakeware?

I keep seeing these in stores, advertised as the latest and greatest. I have trouble popping my breads out of my pyrex pans half the time, so the silicone ones are very tempting. Granted, I'm still saving money for a stoneware one but the inexpensive ones are appealing.

But they're dyed colors and I can't get away from this feeling that they must be outgassing.

What do you guys think?

I've never seen anything indicating they're anything other than safe... silicone is extremely non-reactive and used for medical applications all over the place. I use a diva cup for my periods and that's silicone and it doesn't worry me at all... and I use parchment paper for everything and that's impregnated somehow with silicone... but I use metal pans or stoneware for baking. : I dunno, I just don't like the feel of the bakeware on my hands. Gives me the heebie-jeebies.

They do feel REALLY creepy, but i gotta say I love my angel food cake type bundt pan. I don't even know what you call it, but it's from Le Crueset and bright orange. I never worry about silicone at all. I don't remember what made me buy this pan, but I like it a lot. I don't think I'd use them for everything though. I prefer metal type, like stainless or something

I wish I would have known this. I was wondering the same thing a few weeks ago. Kohl's had silicon bakeware marked down 75%! It is probably gone now, though.

FWIW, my doctor does muscle testing, and foods baked in silicone tested as toxic. So I don't use them.

I have tried and tried to find something against it, and so far, I haven't found anything. I haven't bought any, yet. I'm still slightly wary.

Then again, there weren't any studies done against teflon when it first came out either.

Good point Serena.

I had to smile to see your thread today, because just a few days ago I was looking at all the fun bright-colored silicone bakeware in the store and thinking to myself: "Hmm....I wonder is this stuff is really safe?"

It's nice to find this forum of like-minded people who wonder about the same stuff!

I was given some silicone cups for making lava cakes

But the lava cakes turned out tasting like silicone
So I'm inclined to never use them again.

The way it smells- pretty much a mild plasticy smell.

I have friends who use silicone liners on their cookie sheets for baking, and love them. They say their cookies taste the same as ever

Thank you for that. I also do muscle testing, but never thought to test them . . . however, I'm extremely sensitive to tastes and smells and have noticed that things baked in them, especially breads, have a very "off" smell and taste.

They work extremely well as soap molds though

I'm not keen on the idea of the silicone bakeware, but at the same time I do have a Silpat and also sometimes use parchment paper.....so I guess I am using some silicone.
