If there was an award for worst preggo brain...

I think I would have won it yesterday. I put a pot of water on to boil for lunch and ran downstairs to start some laundry... came upstairs within minutes to a horrible smell and house filled halfway to the ceiling with smoke! Kids were running around like crazy, why the oldest didn't think to come and get me I have no idea. Anyway, ran into the kitchen and saw that I had turned the wrong burner on... my crock pot was sitting on another burner waiting to be put away and that burner was on, red-hot, with blackened and melted crock pot frame around it and some flames... I'm so lucky I didn't burn my whole friggin' house down! Turned burner off, put flames out, began opening windows, shooed kids outside, opened more windows and turned on the attic fan to get the smoke out. There was so much of it! Once it cleared I could see that there was a fine layer of soot left on *everything.* Tried to start cleaning but it was overwhelming, plus we'd had no lunch and had 15 minutes to get to DD's parent-teacher conference. So we just had to leave it like that and the whole time at her conference I'm totally stressed out and very aware that we all smell like smoke and burnt plastic. Lovely. Picked up lunch on the way home and ate it picnic style on the family room floor, no way we could use the kitchen...

Anyway, long story shorter, I spent the entire rest of the day cleaning soot from every surface of my house and trying to salvage the cooktop and range hood. Was still not done with the main floor at 11:00 when I finally took a shower and went to bed. Had to finish a few bits downstairs today (vaccuuming mini blinds and lampshades) and some minor cleaning upstairs still awaits... not sure if I can get some replacement parts for the cooktop or if we have to buy a new one... definitely need a new crockpot... house still smells like burnt plastic and I have no idea how to get it out. All because I was an idiot! Sheesh.

I am just so grateful that it wasn't more serious and we are all okay though. And now that my house will be so clean, I wish this baby would hurry up and come. Obviously he has taken enough of my brain power and I really need it back, or else I shouldn't be left home alone anymore!

wow that's scarey! but i do have to laugh a little....only because i did something kind of similiar the other day. i put bacon in a pan on the stove and turned on the burner...ran downstairs for laundry....i was literally gone 1 min, maybe! came back up to a house FULL of smoke and the bacon was disinigrated, GONE!! isn't that weird?? in a minute!?? i was more freaked that it was only a minute i was gone and the bacon disappeared:...meanwhile DH was freaking out because i could have burned the house down: (he walked in right after ths happened).

i also have NO brain cells left!!:

Thank goodness I am a smidge to OCD to burn the house down (though don't hold your breath!) however, my biggest danger from pregnancy brain right now is on the road. I really shouldn't be allowed to drive in my "condition."

Holy Moly, how scary! I am so glad nothing happened to you and your kids tho. What a mess... yes, you would get the award btw...

I'm glad to hear that this condition is for real! I"ve been wondering if it was just me....I think I've done all of the above....the kitchen stove is my biggest concern. I've ruined 2 pots, left an empty red-hot burner on for over an hour, (just in the last week) and almost driven straight through a "yeild to oncoming traffic" sign at an intersection that would've seriously injured everyone in the car!!! HOLY MOLY!
I swear I'm trying to be aware, is this oxygen deprivation?
I'm just glad to be taking it easy at this point! And hopefully all our guardian angels are working overtime for us now!

My MIL showed me a flier for something she wants to take my dd to on Nov 10th. I told her I thought I had something planned for that day but couldn't remember what. FINALLY the next day I remembered....the 10th is my "due date". !!

Okay, add to my list that I just turned on the washing machine and filled it up with soap and hot water and never put anything it it! It just finished it's cycle completely empty! Sheesh....

OMG! I'm glad everyone is okay, but I can see how the mess it left behind was overwhelming. I think I would have lost it if I did that.

But if there was an award for the worst preggo brain, I'm quite sure my DH would think I deserved it. He just told me the other day that this baby is really doing a number on me. My memory is just shot.

I think it's not only preggo brain, but I just have so much other stuff going on too that I have too much info in there and whatever isn't absolutely crucial just isn't getting stored. *sigh*

Scary stuff, but I'm glad you are all OK. I can't count the number of times I have set the kitchen on fire, many of them when not pregnant, and I know how scary it can be.

In fact, having just gutted half of our kitchen for a reno, we have found so many strange things that we concluded that at one point, there must have been a major kitchen fire at some time in the house's past (it's 115 years old so entirely possible) because the wall we gutted is made of completely different materials than the rest of the house and there are some scary repairs made to the joists that hold the house up (which explains a lot of the rattling noises in the kitchen).

Oh my... I'm glad you're ok and the house is still standing!

Aw, the soot is the worst! I've melted the handles to several crock pot lids.. dang it, they are NOT oven safe to 350!!!

Though, I have to say, some people are just prone to catching things in their kitchen on fire. Like my mom. Most of our cutting boards had burned rings (from the heating element) on one or both sides, a good amount of our tupperware had melted rings, when she was really little she decided to "test" the stove before setting her stuffed animal on it and her hand ended up with burned rings. The best/worst though was when she was on the phone with her sister, leaning up against the stove and could see her reflection in the window across the room and thought it looked a little bright. She yells to her sister "I'm on fire!!!!!" and quickly doused her bathrobe.

Oh how terrifying! I'm glad that you and your family are ok!

When I was in college there was a fire in my building and all my stuff was saturated with smoke and covered in soot. I thought it would all be ruined, but the soot came right off and the smoke smell was gone after a few days, so your house should be back to normal soon.
