talking too loud

My soon to be 5 yr old girl shouts instead of talking. Her hearing was checked at her last well visit, so I don't think that's the problem. I'm constantly saying "not so loud, stop shouting, indoor voice"... Is this normal? Is moderating your voice a skill that takes a while to learn? I'm afraid that my constant shushing is going to turn her into a "low talker" (sienfeld) that no one can understand, but it's just really hard to bare. Any thoughts?

I love that Seinfeld you are talking about! Boy, i miss that show.
I think loud talking is developmental. Just like how some kids talk so low you can't hear them. My almost 4 year old is a low talker...with strangers anyway. I always have to say "speak louder so they can hear."

I say hang in there and wait for it to change as it is sure too with everything kids do.

Emmet is like that. The one thing that works very well for him is if I say (in a very sweet voice)"Honey, I'm right here. I can hear you." I try say it while he's talking and not call attention to it. He immediatey lowers his voice without losing his train of thought. I think he's SO used to having to drown out his VERY talkative twin that he's become accustomed to near-shouting. He's also EXTREMELY energetic.....which adds volume to his voice!

my dd, who is almost 5, speaks pretty loudly too. i am always doing what Treelove suggested, "honey, I[m right here, I can hear you" She'll quiet down for a while, then the volume increases. I have never worried about her hearing, its been checked, and most of her friends do this too. I must say, it drives me crazy!!!

A classroom technique here for you all. If a child is talking way too loud, whisper back.

With out breaking their flow (REALLY IMPORTANT), they get the hint, and self modify.

Another way is to get right up close. Really close, so they know that you are all ears.

I have the same issue. DD who is 5 is just loud in general. Everything she does is loud. I constantly remind her to use her inside voice and I've tried the whispering thing and usually she can't hear me because she is so loud. LOL. But I would love to hear other peoples suggestion. It drives me nuts sometimes. If she isn't talking, she's singing or humming or just making noises with her mouth or taping on something. Arghhh! I'm getting worked up and she isn't even here. LOL.

I laughed when I read this because I do this to my husband. Most of the time he does not get the hint. His voice really carries.

My 4 year old also talks in a shout. At this point, I'm mainly trying to work on my acceptance of the loud talking. I don't remind her as often unless we're in a place where she shouldn't talk loud.
