Raw Milk Taste

I began drinking Raw milk last year... having it shipped from CA frozen and it was awesome! I saw an amazing change in my daughter's GI health. We quit because milk is expensive at $20 a box shipping.

But recently my dear friend has began pasturing milkers and selling cow shares. Great healthy looking cows.... their milk was a little blue at first but it has yellowed up and looks fantastic. That said, I get a terrible sour milk aftertaste everytime I drink it. My DH doesn't notice, my mom doesn't. But my sister tastes it also and refuses to drink anymore.

I don't remember an after taste with the other raw milk... is this normal or is there something wrong with my cow?

BTW, we typically drink it after it's been frozen. Don't know if that makes a difference. Still get the after taste with fresh though.

That is interesting, because I get a sour aftertaste with the raw milk I buy in Japan. I thought it was a kind of acid indigestion (I'm pregant). The milk itself tastes great (and we don't freeze it, BTW).

I think the taste of the milk might change depending on what the cows are eating, i.e. different plants in bloom. Sometimes there is a very very strong taste, other times there is no taste.

Hmm. We buy raw milk from a local dairy. The milk tastes sweet and creamy (unless I leave it in the fridge for a couple weeks).

Raw milk

I don't know about cows but I milk 2 goats and drink there raw milk, it is lovely and sweet with no after taste. But we did have a goat who's milk was not nice and had a real goaty aftertaste. Maybe it is the same in cows as in goats some cows just don't have nice milk.

Hi is that Westen Australia you come from it is a little hard to tell. The is so many overlaps of names of places you are not always aware of what country you are talking to. Not that it matters but it is always nice to find someone from Australia

Are you sure that the milk is fresh? When I started buying raw milk from our co-op I was buying it on Mondays and it tasted kind of gross. Then I read the sign that said milk was delivered on tuesdays and I realised that I was buying week old milk. So I only buy it on Tuesdays now and it tastes great!

I think it's a freshness and refrigeration issue. If it's a bit old/hasn't been refrigerated properly it tastes a bit sour. Still good for you but not as good tasting, IMO.
