preceptor fees

Those of you doing a distance learning program or a direct entry program, how much do you pay your preceptor? if you have a more informal apprenticeship program how much do you pay your senior midwife?

I haven't paid. I wouldn't pay.: Not in an informal apprenticeship, anyway. And as a midwife I would not charge an apprentice. I know one midwife near me who pays her apprentices. It's a small amount per birth, but still.

I consider it a trade. An apprentice is a help to the midwife, an extra set of hands at births, and prenatals, and can do paperwork/phonecalls/office upkeep too. In exchange she gets experience and guidance.

I don't pay either.

I did not pay mine....
My apprentice does not pay me either.
I was paid as an employee when I was a apprentice, and I pay my apprentice a fee also.
They are paid by their experience. They have a number of births they attend and are not paid...as they are not trained yet and can not function solo as my assistant.
As they gain experience....they are given a set amount. They more experience they gain, the more that amount is. Too long for here, but I have guidelines that we go by, and we go over these to assess where they are at.

I don't pay.

In fact, my preceptor pays me (starting 3 months into the apprenticeship) per birth.

Before beginning my program, I was being paid as a birth assistant. When I began the NCM program, we swapped birth assistant duties for preceptor fees. It was a great trade, especially since my preceptors found little and bigger ways to pay me on the side, such as giving me their birth tub to rent and paying for conferences for me.

My preceptor and I don't exchange money. I pay her with my work, and she pays me with her guidance. This is a pretty common system and it can work very well.

I do think that her teaching is worth a lot, though. If I were going to school I would be paying money to study there, and my preceptor deserves compensation. Fortunately, there's a nice built-in barter system in the apprentice/mentor relationship.
