I already gave my DH naming rights...

And, now I'm suddenly afraid! I realize that many many people love the names that are in the top 10 for popularity. http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi For me, I just have such an aversion. Sure, there are some pretty names there, but I prefer classic, but unique names. We have Jude, Cicely and Josephine. These are all names that aren't super popular, but still are traditional names.

So... what is my DH saying his picks are for names (he moves fast on names)... Olivia (beautiful, but #7) and a boy name that's great, too, but you hear every 2 seconds. Then, he tossed me a bone & mentioned Roman for a boy. I jumped up and down! Oh, man! If it's between Roman or Olivia, I'll be voting for a boy!!!

It's my husband's turn to choose this time . But I do have veto rights if I hate.
The deal was, he picked the first girl name, and I picked the first boy name--and then we'd switch...so because we have 3 boys obviously I've had 2 turns, and now it's his turn regardless...

I think he still likes his girl choice from last time: Maia Anne
NO IDEA what he'll choose if it's boy #4 though!!!

But Roman and Olivia are both beautiful names...though I'd be partial to Roman too : .

i'm up this time! i hope anyway. dh picked out dd's name. although, i think my deceased mother had something to do with it.... she was pushing to name me bethany soo hard, but my dad would have nothing to do with it. lol anyway, i think she got to dh because early on, out of the blue, he said if it was a girl we should name it bethany. i pushed against, but he was adamant! lol (he didn't know my naming story) then after she was born we let gabriel give the final say, either bethany or maya(my pick), and he quickly picked bethany. lol thanks mom... lol

i picked out gabriel's name thinking it would be not too popular. ugh, it's really high on the charts now. oh well, i still like it.

i really like olivia and roman too! roman was on my list last time. my neice named her baby romeo though, so that might be too close.

Ooh, you're both up to bat for names! That's so cool!

You know, the thing is, as far as names go, Olivia really is pretty. Even if it is too popular for my tastes. I mean, it's not like Appliance or something!

Okay, the Bethany story... wow. That's undeniably your mother!

Hey, I was thinking, I wonder if he's going for the nickname "Liv". Aren't there other more unusual names that could be shortened to Liv? Suggestions???

I'm a control freak with the naming! It's my turn everytime. Really we try to find one we both like and agree on.

Having grown up an Ashley and having my name yelled out everywhere, I have a complex. My kids can not have common names. Lexi is short for Lexington and we have Caymen.

I told DH the other night I was ready to pick names and got "Can't we wait a little longer?!"

hmm, olive, livy, livia? can't think of any more...

Olivia is my second choice for a girl

I have to admit, I don't give my dh naming rights. i get the stretch marks and the labor experience, so I also then 'earned' primary say in naming our kids. HOWEVER, he gets veto rights. if he genuinely doesn't like the names projected for the kid, he can say 'heck no' and I figure out a new name - he's welcome to suggest, but I am the one who determines if it's even in the running.

i do believe in giving our kids heritage names, and names with strong meanings, so that does impact our decisions with naming kids. dh likes my approach with that and so far, has liked all the names i've come up with - where both sides of our family is honored and reflected in our children's names. makes it a cool thing for the kids as they grow to have that link to their past.

Just our 'method' for naming our kids.

'sides, I enjoy reading the geneology pages of our family backgrounds.

my 13yo is an Olivia
When I named her (after my grandpa Oliver) her name was not popular at all, she was the only Olivia in the entire school until 4th grade, now there are a few in our small town named Olivia but she doesn't mind. She likes that she can now find things with her name on them (pencils, notebooks etc at back to school time) for a long time I couldn't find ANYTHING with Olivia on it.

We call her Olivia and Livi...

DH has only one requirement for a boy, the name must start with D and the middle name must be Eric. His dad is a D and he is a D and they both have Eric for a middle name so he wants to continue that tradition. I don't mind so much I think its sweet, but I am NOT finding D names I like :

I like Roman for a girl! Or Jordan. Summer is #1 on my list for a girl right now (I see that's around #150).

I'm a teacher so I get to see ALL the most popular names cycle through. There are about fifty Aidens and Emmas in my school now.

Here's how Tom and I chose our first name.
1. We printed out a list of the top 1000 baby names (only girls, since we knew we were having a girl) from the US Gov. Census web site, one copy for each of us.
2. We automatically excluded anything in the top 10.
3. Independently, we read the list and circled all the names we liked. We starred all the names we really, really liked! We x'd out all the names we really DIDN'T like.
4. We shared our lists. Any circled names went on the short list. Any starred names went at the top. Any x'd names were automatically disqualified, even if one of us had circled or starred them.
5. We looked at the short list (about 20 names) and put them together into pairs, looking for names that sounded good together.
6. We wrote a few pairs on a sheet of paper and posted it prominently in the house, living with them for a while.
7. Eventually we both came to agreement on a name that we both liked. (Ivy Sophia)

No family names or heritage. If we have a boy, though, we'll make his middle name Thomas after my husband.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I'm going to drop them by my DH's desk.

morganstar83 What does your last name sound like? Don't post the real thing. I think I like Aidan Zane the best of the suggestions, just depends on the flow with your last naem.
