Anyone see the Australian recall of Bindeez (Aqua Dots)??

I just pulled up my local paper online and saw that the Australian gov't pulled all Bindeez, which is the same thing/manufacturer of Aqua Dots, off the shelves because when ingested they release a hallucinogenic drug like the date rape drug. Where was the product made? Do I really need to answer that? This is so ridiculous! I was actually thinking of getting these for DS for Christmas. Toys R US Canada pulled the Aqua Dots from the shelves, too.

I'd better look into this. I bought them for the kids for Christmas. They don't eat things, but still.

I caught part of a news brief that they were recalled, the part I caught it didn't say why though I had a suspicion that it was over ingestion as they are small little balls & they showed a child coming out of a hospital.

My dd got one for her birthday last week, I'll still let her play with it. She's 9 & knows better than to put things in her mouth.

I did some more research and the parent company claims that the affected batches came from a specific Chinese facility and that those batches were only sent to Australia. I still think I'll pass on them.

My dad just left me message about this! He gave my 6yo son this for his birthday last month.

The recall is NOT limited to Australia. Here is a link to the article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1194...googlenews_wsj

Dd wanted this toy for Christmas. She probably wouldn't put it in her mouth but our dog would if he found one on the floor.

One of the little girls that was hospitalized was older as well, and I am sure she "knew better" than to put things in her mouth...but we don't all always do what we know not to, do we. I know better than to drive over the speed limit, but I still do it.

I wouldn't take any chances with any of these toys that are being recalled, IMO.

US CPSC info:

That bulletin doesn't specify the chemical process involved, but my understanding is that when the beads are swallowed, a chemical in their coating can be metabolized into gamma hydroxy butyrate (GHB, similar to Rohypnol).
