But the next year they got her a ceramic set I think from W-M
They'd go there, but it's no good if I can't tell them *exactly* what to get. Any leeway and it's useless.

We get store credit, then we go with DD, help her pick a few items to chose from, then discuss the merits of each - including quality. She has learned that she can trade several small, junky toys for one item that will last longer and is nicer.

We're really using all the recalls to defend our decision to seek mostly non-plastic and non-MIC toys and my more mainstream family is actually sympathetic. But I also seek NON-TOY things for them to get - clothes, art supplies, books, magazine subscriptions, feeding items (like new cups, forks, thermos, etc.), a tote bag for carrying to school, winter jacket, etc.

Also, I use the dog and now our baby as a reason for NOT getting things that are plastic (the dog chews them up - which she doesn't since she was a puppy, but I'll never tell!) or have a 1000 peices (choking hazard, or the baby will lose them). And I have strict No-Barbie, No-Princess rules, which my mom actually fully supports. DD ends up getting Dora junk instead....which we return (she has dora stuff from yard sales, the new stuff goes back to the store). But you are pregnant - you can start using the "choking hazard" line again
I don't care about plastic or MIC honestly. And dd LIKES things with 1000 pieces....

I have a good list of books. I don't trust these family members to buy clothes or anything of the sort.

Given the nature of this get-together (everyone is in town) all the toys get opened then and there so returns really won't work. Basically if we don't let dd open her one or two toys there then everyone else is playing with new toys and she's not- and that's not cool.

We have the same problem with our inlaws. Some suggestions of more common toys that DS loves to play with:

-Doctor's Kit
-Tool Box
-Memory game
-Books on tape
-Gears
-Playmobil sets
-Stickers and stamps (This is one of DS's favorite things to do. The big wood ones are great for his little hands. I keep a box of them just for him filled with colorful inkpads that he can get all mucky, card stock and glue sticks. We'll sit and cut out pictures he likes from magazines and make collages then he'll decorate them with stamps/stickers.)

Good luck! DS's 3rd birthday is coming up so I'll be checking back here for more ideas. ;-)

I've been looking for a good CD player she could use by herself (with minimal help) I'll go search for one- good idea!
The one we've bought looks very similar to this one.

I see you already have lots of great responses, but I just wanted to add that we got my 3yo cousins a bucket of plain, unpainted wooden xmas tree ornaments at Michael's, along with a few sets of tempera paints. It gave the kiddos something to do with their elderly relatives who were visiting, and they were so proud of their weird, splotchy, purple Santas, etc. You can usually get unpainted plastic ball ornaments at Target, too.

That's a REALLY cool idea However, christmas with this half of the family is already overcrowded And let's just say that my 3yr old twin nephews can't be trusted with crayons... no way I'm attempting paint with them.... :

But I am planning to do Christmas ornaments for an upcoming baby shower/meet the baby party I'm hosting- I hadn't seen the buckets of wooden ornaments- I'll have to look for those!
