Lucy in the Sky, cosmicplutoknits:

Callie, ibid:

Thermal, Knitty (would be modified to be a cardigan):

Estelle, a Berocco pattern:

Particulars:

I need a lightweight cardigan for wearing in the house this winter. It needs to fit over a t-shirt or 2, but it cannot be bulky. It's not really for outdoor wear - just saving on the energy bills!

I will be making whichever pattern I choose out of a sport-weight wool, knit on size 3mm (2 1/2) needles. I don't mind small needles/stitches, and I'm up for modifying the pattern for gauge, but if you've made any of these and they really need to be done in worsted only, I should know that!

I am - ahem - a portly gal. 5'3", round and chunky. So while this cardigan does not need to make me look like a glamour girl (can a layering cardi even do that?), I would prefer it also not make me look like a short hearty sausage! (Like all those photos of ladies in their Einstein coats -- all that worsted-weight garter stitch looked fine on the skinny designer, but...)

Hope the poll works!

If you are bigger you will want a V neck. A deeper V is best for most women. Avoid high necks like the plague!

Samus is gorgeous and what I'll vote for buy only if you change it to a V neck.

I like Lucy in the sky--looks like fun to knit.

I also like Callie and Basic Black.

Having knit sonnet I can tell you it works best in a heavier (worsted-ish) yarn, and since it doesn't have any short-rows or other shaping it's very boxy and so may not be suitable for a fuller figure.

I liked Seamus and Sonnet equally, but voted for Seamus b/c I thought Sonnet was wrong for the yarn you described.

Ooooh, I like both the Lucy in the Sky and Callie. I think the length of the Callie would be more flattering (at least for my, I'm pretty, ummmmm, curvy) but I do like the pattern on the Lucy.

Erm. I've knitted Samus, and it gets worn by my mother: a pear-shaped UK size 8 (that's a size 4 over there, I think?) It's NOT a great length on anyone who carries weight on their hips or their tummies, because you have a band of detail right the way around the middle of your band of detail. Also, being serious, there's no shaping whatsoever between the band and the armholes, just continuous, nonstop stockingette. In 4ply? It would drive me batty.

My votes are tied between Basic Black and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (which I may, possibly, like even more than Basic Black.) They're now both on my to-knit list.

Oh; and for Basic Black, I wouldn't do the maths, I'd just knit it in DK.

Size 4 in US sizing is supermodel skinny (though with the vanity sizing that goes on it sometimes fit us more reality based gals too.) Is your mom tiny?

I am not sure which you should choose but I LOVE the list!

Which of those seems the very very easiest? (I'd do it in a heavier yarn - probably worsted) I just really got excited when I saw this whole list of cardigans because I am going to do the whole sweater inside deal as well and was hoping to make one, but am afraid of making a sweater.

I am just learning how to knit on a loom right now with hopes of learning how to use needles eventually, so I can't give you any knitting tips, but I can tell you that I like the looks of the thermal one best. It looks like a great sweater to wear around the house to me, casual yet cozy.

I think Sonnet would be the very easiest.

All right ladies, I think I am leaning toward Lucy! (Of course that is the only pattern among them that costs money... )

But keep the opinions coming, because I do not have money in the budget for "enough" yarn quite yet anyway!

I vote for Basic Black, but only if you knit it in a prettier color. Black is great for, you know, a work wardrobe, but if you are going to be wearing it all winter, my vote would be for something a bit more cheerful. Probably not a pastel, but maybe a nice deep blue, green, or purple.

WOW this is an old thread, but I am bumping it up to say that I never did make a cardigan last year, but have now decided on Lucy. Stay tuned for progress! :
