that's a good question
this is the biggest intrigue in my life right now.
my last labor was 92 minutes long. DH is certain we'll make it to the hospital (60 minutes away) on time, but i'm not so sure. it will likely be mid-late january, when ice and snow storms are unpredictable, and we live in the mountains of rural new england. i don't exactly want to give birth in the car, and i think that if i wasn't going to make it on time, i'd rather just stay at home and go unassisted, hoping everything is ok. my firstborn needed care at birth, but my second one flew out like a champ. there are no midwives who service my area, so i can't have a planned homebirth. my options are:
1. hospital birth with DH and MW (if i can make it on time, and if my MIL can make it to watch the kids in time- she lives 60 minutes in the other direction, and i don't want her living with us beforehand, though i might have to bend on that). but then, i don't want to stay overnight at the hospital, if i can swing that.
2. unplanned homebirth with DH and the kids (if things seem to be going too fast, or if we have no coverage for the kids at the time).
3. in the car. with DH. and the radio.
part of me really wants #2, but i don't want to be ignorant of the value of having medical care available. i am just so hesitant to be away from my other kids and in a hospital. i want to birth *my way,* and i would rather just do it in the comfort, warmth, and peace of my own home. unfortunately, if we run into an emergency in a homebirth, the paramedics would legally have to transport us to the local hospital, which is nasty-nast, and provides horrible care, instead of my planned birthing hospital, where there is a real honest-to-goodness nicu.
so... i just don't know where or who would be there. but a car birth would certainly be exciting, wouldn't it?
