What is your Baby's torso size at birth?

I was wondering if you could help me with a simple project.

Could you measure your newborn baby's torso (around chest/nipples) for consistency and tell me the measurement?

I am working on a prototype newborn stocking for babies born in the month of December and plan on making 2 versions for my midwife. A small and a large, where both will have adjustable sizing to fit a good variety of babies.

The torso measurement is really necessary for me as I have no clue how big around baby torsos are. My 2 children were not measured on torso size - just head circumference.

Thank you so much for helping me with this project!!

DD was born yesterday, so the number is fresh in my mind-39cm...but she was 10 lbs and my midwife said she has the largest chest measurement in her 8 years on delivering. HTH's

Don't have a newborn, but I measure lots of them! Typically the measurement across the nipples is the same as the head measurement above the eyebrows. That's varies from 13" for a 6.5 pound baby to 16" for a 10.5 pound baby.

Thank you!! This is very helpful. So even a tiny baby is going to be around 13" (one that is full term, but lightweight and doesn't need 'special' nicu or anything) up to 16" ?

The 15 1/2" (39cm) measurement is very similar to my friend shauna who had a baby that was 10lbs9oz at birth - I was using her baby's measurement for the upper end of the size.

Knowing 13" is probably about the average for smallest babies is helpful on snap placement and would mean I might not even need a second size - that size varience looks ok on one size newborn stocking!

Now I just need to figure out if the midwife plans on putting baby deep in stocking or just waist and legs in stocking as that will also affect the dimensions - I'll need to add in a few inches for arms that are burrito rolled (receiving blanket wrapped, lol) if baby is placed all the way in up to neck. . . .

My prototype right now will fit up to 16 1/4" circumference. . . which may not be quite large enough including arms . ..

Thank you and I will continue checking this thread! I'll be sure to post a link of the finished product once decorative trims, etc and final dimensions are agreed on by midwife.
