coffee and wine - Page 2

I have coffee every morning but it's like 3/4 heated soy milk with a touch of coffee. Very yummy though.

Haven't had any alcohol since I found out i was pregnant. I've only wanted it a few times and we don't keep it on hand so I didn't have any. I mostly like wine, etc in the warmer months anyway. The one thing I do miss this year is dh's family's STRONG recipe for egg nog, and I wouldn't drink that as it has tons of booze and raw eggs in it!!!

These things are determined culturally, not scientifically. In Europe, it's common for pregnant women to have a glass of wine or a beer and no one thinks anything of it. We simply have a culture that freaks at the merest possibility that something might, maybe, go wrong. The concern with alcohol is fetal alcohol syndrome which requires consistent, heavy drinking throughout a pregnancy. No one here is talking about getting plowed daily, just the occasional glass of wine or beer. These have not been proven to be harmful. Recent studies of caffeine during pregnancy show that it has no bad effects, even if you go nuts on the stuff.

I eat sushi! The concern there is mercury in fish. If you chose rolls with low mercury fish, it's a good source of protein and omega fatty acids. It's all about making sensible choices and being informed and not alarmist. It takes work to mess up a baby, IMO.
