Delaney Claire's story

Well, it didn't go according to plan, but we are really happy with our birth experience as a whole. My water broke at 3:30am on Friday morning. My plan was to birth at the hospital, so I knew that as soon as I went in with broken water, they would time stamp me. Esp being GBS+. So we waited till 9:30am, and went in. We walked and did everything to get things moving, but by 1:30pm that afternoon, not a single contraction. Not even a twinge. So we chatted with the Dr who said we could either keep trying or start pit. We discussed with Dr and ourselves all angles. On one hand, we could wait, but if it nothing happened after awhile, we would be more under the gun to get things moving.....or if we started pit then, we could just really low dose it and give it more time and hope to kick start my body that way. So we opted to start pit 2 hours later. Pit started at 3:30pm, and after an hour, no contractions. They upped it and I had 2 non-painful contractions in the next hour. This went on until it had been upped 10 times total and I was at the max dose they would give without getting approval from the Dr. I was having good contractions then and things were kicking. They checked me at 1pm and I was a "snug 4cm". They were very good about not asking to check me like our plans stated, unless we asked. The nurse was also great and helped set up monitoring and IV so I could move around, get on the birth ball, etc even while on the pit. She actually encouraged it. So at 8pm they checked my and I was a "good 4cm". I was so frusturated then. By 10pm though I was miserable. Pit was on high and I was beggin for pain meds. Contractions were one on top of each other and it was not like I remembered my first birth. Finally about 11:30pm I told DH the pit got the best of me and I wanted pain meds. I was shaking, vomiting, etc. He says,...you could be so close though. I was thinking...or it could just be the pit and I could still be 4cm! SO the nurse checked me at midnight and I was 7cm and moving fast. The got the room ready and at 12:15pm I told her I felt bad pressure. At this point I think I was still begging for pain meds...lol. I had the shakes and pukes and the contractions were so different on the pit than when I had my first without. The Dr popped in, DH said I felt pressure, she looked and there was baby's head and I was complete. I pushed for 14 minutes and out came baby. 8lb 9oz and 20.5 inches long. Just perfect. No tearing. They totally stuck to my plan, put her on my belly, waiting for cord to stop pulsing, waited for placenta, the works. THey came back 2 hours later to see if we wanted warm clothes to wipe down under her chin and such. I must say that for a hospital birth, and the fact that it went totally of track with the pit, they followed everything else to the plan perfectly. They made concesssions when we asked for them. They gave us options, risk/benefit analysis, everything while we went. About 4:30am the nurse that saw me through it came in and told me she was really amazed I did that drug free and that even though she had had 3 medicated births, if she had a 4th it would be a homebirth. She said she was so excited to see my plan because she couldnt wait to help get me in the tub, change positions, etc as I went. I was so blessed to end up with her. We chatted for an hour in the early morning, with baby nursing, and it was very very sweet.

Given the turn of events, we are very happy with our experience and given the circumstances, couldn't have planning the outcome better.

Nursing is going great and we are all just super happy!

The support you got from the staff at the hospital sounds terrific - in fact it made me cry because I've heard so many awful stories lately from my doula friends. Glad that you and Delaney got off to a great start and you were able to get most of the birth that you wanted - you are a strong mama to do all that while on pit!

Congrats, Joanna! I had the same start to my labor with Dylan. Sorry your labor was so drawn out with the pit but it sounds like you did GREAT in spite of unexpected circumstances. I'm jealous of the no-tearing thing and the 14 minutes pushing!!! Way to go!

BTW, my son asked me to turn on "the hair band" the other day when I got the computer out. It was actually on Delainey's birthday... so we watched it as our little tribute to your birth.
