I just read a notice from our insurance company rejoicing because Utah has finally reached an immunization level above the national average. : (They were looking at the 3rd column figures in that above link).

So I should be pretty excited that Washington State ranges (in 2002) from 50-56%? It appears this percentage is among the lowest in the US (this must be due in part to the option for philosophical exemption in WA state).

Does anyone have any suggestions (like one pivotal research piece about the risks of vaxing) for "educating" a friend of mine about the risks involved with vaccinations? She thinks the non-vaxing parents (like me) are irresponsible and that their decisions to avoid vaxing is putting her kids at greater risk for contracting the diseases.

thanks!

Sounds like she's been talking to her pediatrician.

yes, I'm sure it's related to talking to the ped. Her ped told her that since 1999, thimerosal has not been an issue in the vaxes their practice gives out. I told her, even if that's true, there are other risks involved with vaccinating beyond just thimerosal. Also, my son was born in late 1999 and I still rec'd thimerosal containing Rhogam (I'm Rh negative) during pregnancy, right after birth, and in his vaccinations at least well into the year 2000. Unfortunately, I was uneducated about vaxes until after he had rec'd 2 years worth of standard schedule vaccinations.

I wish there were a couple pivotal research pieces on the risks inherent in vaccinations. It would go a long way toward helping to educate the general populace (and friends and family who are unaware) about the risks associated with vaccinating.
