Baby weight loss, jaundice, etc...nursing...

So baby is coming up on 72 hours old. She was 8lb 9oz at birth, and 8lb 3oz at the 24 hours mark. My milk started coming in last night (about 48 hours mark). We took her to Dr today (part of the condition of our early release since I was GBS+) and she is "slightly jaundice" and weighed 6lb 12oz!! Dr said don't worry, she looks great, jaundice maybe just making her extra sleepy so make sure you roust her every couple hours to nurse well now that milk is in.

Still, I am slightly freaked. Any suggestions? Thoughts? No chance it's a supply thing is it?

Your milk is here and if the docs are not pushing supplementing, then it doesn't seem like there is a reason to worry. Hang in there! Nursing is so hard at first. Conrad nursed like a champ on day one but has slowed down a lot and now I am fretting... he loiters a lot on the breast.

My sympathies. Try not to worry too much -- it sounds like you will be fine.

it's so hard not to worry. how is her diaper output? how often is she nursing during the day? my girls were so sllepy the first 5 days or so and we had to wake them every 2-3 hours to eat.

i wouldn't worry about your supply at this point, it's still ear;y since your milk is just coming in.

Keep at it. Now that your milk is coming in, I bet the weight will start to stick. Pay attention to wet/poopy diapers.

Asher was 8 lbs. 2 oz. at birth, and dropped to 7 lbs. 3 oz. at three days old. He had no regular poopy diapers yet (only tar/meconium) and was getting quite jaundiced. Our great pediatrician stuck with us, and Asher finally pooped some *real* poop a few days later. At ten days old, he was up to 8 lbs. 8 oz.--a gain of 1 lb. 5 oz. in a week! He nursed like a champ, just needed more of my milk to come in to prove to everyone he was getting something. Now, he's really filling out.

Hang in there! Weigh him again in a couple days, if you're concerned.

If your doc isn't worried, then just nurse, nurse, nurse. Your supply will match the demand placed on it for most people and if she is just a bit sleepy, she may just need that extra awake time to get the supply up. Also make sure she eats enough at each feeding - keep tickling her cheek or feet to see if she wants to suck and swallow some more. Good luck! I know how hard it is as DD was a nightmare to feed and we had some major battles getting her attached at all.

If you are having many wet diapers, I think your babe will start gaining soon! If you notice the diapers are dry, then definitely talk to your doctor!

That's the thing....all is perfectly well it seems. She is nursing every couple hours, and has not a single issue with it. Just a perfect nurser. She has passed all meconium and has had about 3-4 solid breast fed baby blow out yellow poops. Wet diapers galore, esp since milk came in over the last 12 hours.

Just stumped at the weight loss???

Was she weighed on a different scale? They can be really off.

Weight loss is totally normal the first days, specially in babies with some jaundice, they need to get rid of extra blood. You're doing a great job with all those poops and soaked diapers! Hugs to you.
