As a midwife, what do you do when... - Page 2

It's hard for me to remember any sense of time while I was in labor. But I was laboring and I felt the baby slide down an inch or so and asked to be checked. I was completely dilated. So I got up on the squat bar and did a few test pushes which brought the baby down really well. This was my second baby, so my body was ready for it. I pushed through just a few contractions in this manner, then the baby went into distress. This was in the hospital with a CNM. They forced me onto my back, did a bunch of stuff to me I didn't like, and I fought them on it. Everyone was screaming at me to push, and I eventually did, but my heart wasn't into it. I was all distracted with all the hell that broke loose in the room. But the baby was born within the next few contractions.

I do believe that his cord was pinched. He had a true knot in a nuchal cord that must have been pinched when he entered the birth canal.

It was really cool when I felt him moving down at first. It didn't hurt at all. But I'd have to say I had an excruciatingly painful birth. I wonder if I would have had a painless birth without all the interventions.

Sounds like the mw just wasn't getting baby's heart tones--maybe yours, or maybe not all of baby's.
