Anyone NOT rent a pool?

As much as I think I'd like to, it's just not in our budget. We have a roman tub, which I know isn't really big enough or deep enough to birth in. But maybe I can use it for pain management? With dd, all I wanted was to be in the tub, but when I went to the birth center they made me get out, saying it was stalling my labor. : So will I regret not having one this time around?

Yup! Best thing there is!
I have a farmer friend, who used one of those huge watering troughs!!
I labored in my itty bitty bathtub, in about 10 inches of water, right up til the birth!

I second the inflatable pools Cheap and easy to use! I've heard alot of people prefered the inflatables to the expensive rentals for the comfort factor!!

I think that mamas who rent pools are actually in the minority here. Most moms buy the inexpensive inflatable pools.

Didn't rent a pool, it was not in my budget. I figured I can just go in our bath tub or take a shower(I lived in a small apartment at that time). I ended up not doing any of those, just gave birth in the bathroom w/ my husband using a cold cloth on my back while I stood and squat.

Since you know already that you like to get in a tub go for the kiddie pool if you can afford it.

Well, I just labored in the tub and admittedly it DID stall my labor, that and I didn't have a desire to have a water birth, so no I didn't rent a pool. I've heard the fishy pools work just as well. Do you really want to have a water birth or just want to labor in the water and birth elsewhere? If you just want to labor in the water a bathtub is plenty adequate.

i have no desire to be wet in labor, the idea really actually bothers me. maybe if i was giving birth in august, but may in Minnesota isnt really a hot time of year.

I did the kiddie pool too. I had a waterbirth w/ my first, and I kind of thought I'd like to try something different. I got the pool just in case, not expecting to use it. But I did use it and I think I'd have really regretted not having it!

The only thing that makes us want to rent is that there is somewhere in town that we can rent from and they will come out and clean up the day after the birth. However, we are considering a budget and so I think we are going to buy a pool that will be less expensive than renting. I don't really want to got with the fishy pool because I just can't see how the water won't slosh out all over the floor when MW or DH leans over the edge. We're looking at the birth pool in a box which we can get for about $150. REnting the pool would be $275.

We used the fishy pool. No problems with it at all either time. The sides of it are firmer than it looks.

At my third birth I was pushing while on my knees leaning against one side. My mw was around behind me to catch and was leaning into the side with her knee. The sides didn't collapse one bit and the next day my mw even had a small bruise on her knee where she had been leaning on it.

For my last birth I was in the same position and dh was leaning over the side to catch ds. And once again the sides held up perfectly fine.

The mw I apprentice with bought the Birth Pool in a Box this summer. We've used it for one birth so far and it also held up really well.

We bought a rubbermaid trough for my second and third births. I birthed in the first time, just used it for pain management the second. It wasn't important enough to me to go to the trouble to set it up for my fourth. I knew I didn't want another waterbirth, and figured I could just use our tub if I wanted to be in hot water (we have a roman tub too.) I never did get in the tub.

Why do you think the tub wouldn't be big enough to birth in? I've seen births in those little average-sized tubs!

I saw a video of a birth in a bathtub and it looked big enough to me! She was sideways and squatting. I rented a tub last time and used it for 20 minutes. This time I'm getting the $30 fishy pool. You can probably find it a little cheaper if you shop around. Enjoy your birth and labor- where ever it happens!

Is it hard to keep the fishy pool type warm enough?

I didn't have any trouble. It was probably around 78 or 80 in the room at the time though. I was in the pool about 12 hours. We added warm water 2-3 times.

Good to know. I'm just sooooo anal about being cold when wet. I can't stand it. I can't stand being in cold water and since I'll be birthing in April there is a good possibility it will still be very cold out. Course, I suppose my thoughts on cool water could change during birth. Roll with the punches I guess.

Where do you guys get the fishy pool? Husband and I decided today that that's the way to go. We have a huge tub with jets, but I can't imagine having to clean it after. Or rather, I can imagine, and don't want to go that route.

I got mine, both times, here:

We used the 60"x22" one. I thought about using the hexagon one the last time but when I went to order, they were sold out. We probably wouldn't have had room for it anyway.

I love that they actually mention birthing in the item description! I might have to order it from there just because of that.
