Insurance Question -X Posted

I am planning a home birth in July but I have a question........I accepted a new job last week and I'm 4.5 weeks pregnant. So, by the time my insurance kicks in 60 days after I'm hired I will be 16 weeks.

My pregnancy will be covered, right? If my employer provides insurance then my pregnancy isn't considered pre-existing.

I plan to pay cash for the midwife, but if I needed to be transferred to the hospital I would like insurance.

I'm in TX also.

Yes, the pregnancy will be covered. It cannot NOT be covered. Pre-existing conditions cannot be applied to pregnancy.

Also, insurance could cover you homebirth as well as an out-of-network thing. My homebirth was covered by Great West at the 50% out-of-network rate.

FISERV will be covering this birth the same way. I pay the cash price to the midwife. I submit receipts to FISERV showing that I'm paying. After the birth, the MW will draw up a final invoice like this:

Total price - which is higher than the cash price
(Less payments received)
-------------------------
Total Due.

I will submit this to FISERV and fill out the form in such a way that they only have permission to give ME money, not the midwife. The is my reimbursement.

Make sense?

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info! I did some research on-line and found that because of HIPPA laws they have to cover the pregnancy, just like you said.

One thing I forgot to mention. You may not want to admit you are having a homebirth. Just tell them you are using a midwife who is out-of-network. They just won't happpen to receive a bill for hospital charges, just the care provider.

This way, they cannot throw a stink about the birth palce.
