PT Conferences coming up

dd got her report for this trimester. The report held no surprises. I think she has improved tremendously in the areas that she got "needs improvement". All of these areas were something we know about and are part of her personality. They aren't really something we see changing quickly. More or less these are things that kids need to fit in the school model of learning.

I'm hoping you might help me construct a response to her teacher.

I'm starting to think dd may be a little gifted. According to the report she is reading at a level 18 in Kindergarten which is 2nd grade. She has an amazing grasp of concepts and learns that way more than in a direct memorization and repetition way. dh and I were both considered gifted in school (though I was the dumbest kid in the gifted class!) so if things like that are genetic there is a chance she might be mildly gifted.

And I think gifted kids learn in a different way (actually all kids learn in a different way!).

Why do you need a response to the teacher? Seems like you already have a good grasp of what is going on and, essentially agree that "needs improvement' is appropriate and is a work in process.

I would do a little reading on www.hoagiesgifted.org. I would be concerned that she has the opportunity to learn something new each day. Having appropriately challenging work can make behaviors - such as those that kids need to fit into the school model - much better.

I would probably ask the teacher what she thinks would be helpful to your daughter as far as working on her areas that need improvement. If you are very lucky, her teacher may be onto the fact that your daughter may need differentiated work. If not, you might check the hoagies site for articles on advocating at school, there are a lot of good ideas there.
