does this really work?

Yep. So far, anyway. I use 1 Tbsp flax meal to 3 Tbsp hot water.

Yep. Let it sit for a bit to"gel" first.

Some other egg subs that have worked well for me:

1/4 c. coconut milk (coconut milk is dairy-free) mixed with one heaping teaspoon of baking powder for each egg. This will get really fluffy so mix in a container that will allow for expansion.

One packet of plain, unflavored gelatin mixed with 2 tablespoons of warm liquid.

yes indeed! Although I must admit that I stopped using it due to the instability of flax oil. I feel uncomfortable exposing it to high temps, though I never saw any research to back up my paranoia. Anyone else?

I use flax seed and it works great. Depending on the recipe, even better than egg replacer. It gives a great nutty flavor, when egg replacer adds nothing.

Yes, for every teaspoon of ground flax seed, add 1 teaspoon of hot water and let sit for 3-4 minutes.

It works well, but if you eat too much of whatever you baked, you'll be spending a lot of time on the toilet. Why are you replacing the eggs?
