Placental abruption

Hi there, I am 22 weeks today and I had a level two ultra sound in which they detected a small placental abruption. They are having me come back in a month for another scan, but I am wondering what this means for my pregnancy. I haven't had any bleeding or any extraordinary cramping or anything. I'd appreaciate some professional opinions. The doctor at the Sono clinic just freaked me out - I won't see my midwife for 2 weeks.

You may want to up you vitamin E to strengthen your placenta. ou could try wheat germ oil, that's good stuff. I would also get a good pregnancy tea with Nettles, Alfalfa, and some other good stuff to help strengthen tour uterus and as an overall pregnancy tonic. Good luck, I hope that it doesn't get any worse and you can carry to term.

Was there any free flowing blood, pockets of blood? Do you know anything more in-depth?

No that is part of the problem. I havent' been bleeding at all. All she said was that they would have me come back in a month for a scan. She also did some sort of blood test to figure if there were fetal cells in my blood. That is why I am freaked, because she didn't give me any specific information....

What could you see on the u/s? I had a bleed around 8 weeks I didnt bleed out words, I just had a funny feeling somrthing wasnt right. The bleed was the cause of some of the placenta letting go after having the stomach flu and throughing up. The bleed was the same size as the baby and gestional sac of eight weeks, small compared in size but could have resulted in m/c. Instead I trusted my body and said it will know what to do, never went for another u/s and went two weeks over due. When I looked at my placenta after the birth I was looking for signs of it couldnt find anything. It had resolved itself.

Get the u/s report from medical records, have someone exsplain it to you, or ask one of the great ladies hear for a phone consult, were you can read it to them and they can make sense of it for you. You need to know what exactly is going on. FYI anytime you get a test or anything done for you or your fam, go to records and get a copy of it. You need to be your own advocate.

If you want my opinion about it, I think that if you're going back in a month, and there was no frank bleeding, then things are fine.

We forget that the placenta is amazing. I read somewhere that a baby's placenta can lose a large portion of its function and still sustain a pregnancy.

Let us know if things change for you.

Thanks Pama, that's what I wanted to think. The doctor asked me about my two other girls and how big they were at birth and then stressed that the placenta was a miraculous organ and that they wanted to make sure the growth was on track and that's why they were having me back. Your input makes me feel better, just knowing this isn't a guarentee of a problem is good!

If you are freaking out please call your mw! You should be able to talk to her anytime not just at appointments. I hate it when sono techs tell something and then the mom is worried with not immediate consult with their caregiver.

That is a big pet peeve of mine too. Sonographers really shouldn't be saying anything without corroboration with the primary HCP.:

Just for the record wasn't the the sonographer. They had an OB come in and discuss it with me. She just didn't do a very good job. She also sent me for a Kreutzfeld something or other blood test

I got the results today there was no fetal hemoglobin in my blood which they said was good. I will see my midwife on Thursday, I didn't even think to call my midwife - which is just silly. I will probably call on Monday to get the downlow.

Placental abruptions can be associated with high blood pressure. Get your rest, take some calcium and magnesium and you should be fine. Keep your protein up also. Take care.
