I am planning my second homebirth. I am 30 weeks along and just starting to gather my supplies. Last time we used plastic sheeting from the hardware store (under a fitted sheet) to protect our mattress. However, I really cannot STAND the smell of the stuff, plus I really disliked the whole feel and sound of plastic on my bed. My midwife recommended a shower curtain, but I am trying to avoid vinyl because of the VOC off-gassing and the smell of a shower curtain is even worse. I cannot for the life of me figure out an alternative that would provide reliable protection for our mattress.
I have thought maybe a thick wool blanket might work? I am really stumped and would like to find a better solution because I plan to co-sleep with my cloth-diapered baby and I think I might need some extra mattress protection for that, too!
Am I just being a prima donna here? Should I just get over it and put the darn plastic on my bed?

- for a few weeks and let it air out.
