Congratulations on your little boy! Joseph is a wonderful name. I hope you can get your strength back quickly so you can be with him.

Aspiration very simply means that a foreign substance is in the lungs. So meconium aspiration means there is meconium in the lungs. Before a baby is born they do a lot of practice breathing. But since there is no air they just move amniotic fluid in and out of their lungs. If there is meconium in the fluid, then the baby is pulling meconium into their lungs. You've seen how sticky and tar like meconium is. If it gets into the lungs it coats the delicate aveoli
. This keeps the lungs from exchanging gas like it is supposed to. Normally during labor if there is not mec the fluid in the lungs is squeezed out by the tight fit through the birth canal. This is also why c-section babies tend to have trouble breathing, they have not had the fluid squeezed out of their lungs (among other things).
It is wonderful that you were educated enough, and able to listen to your instincts well enough, to get help when it was needed. I hope your family is together soon.
