New flooring for kitchen and bathroom-linoleum or hardwood laminate?

Two rooms in my house need new floors. The worst is the kitchen, which has old, hunter green linoleum stick-down tile that someone stuck on top of linoleum carpet :. It is peeling around the fridge from not being installed properly/water exposure. I'm tired of looking at it and its embarrassing to have people come over and see it the way it is. I love the look of hardwood laminate, but after talking to my grandpa who is a home-repair expert, I am wary of it because he said if there is any water exposure it will bubble up, and basically didn't think it was a good choice for kitchens and bathrooms.
The bathroom upstairs has the same linoleum carpet that is under the tile in the kitchen. Folks its probably been here since the 70's-I'm not kidding. It's ugly and outdated. This house was built in 1915 and I'm not all that interested in finding out the condition of the floor underneath, so we will likely tile over it or install the laminate over it ( I was told hardwood laminate can be installed on top of any existing floor because it is a floating system ) If you've ever done projects like this, I would love to hear your stories and input!

I definitely wouldn't go with a wood product in a bathroom- it's going to get wet no matter what you do, and that's going to cause some issues. If you can figure out a way to put tile in there, I feel like it's by far the best bathroom flooring option. You've also got a lot of options these days when it comes to period tiling, and you could probably have something very nice in a small room like that for not an insane amount of money. Sheet linoleum would be a distant second choice.

Again with the kitchen I'd probably go with tile because of the moisture issues. However, I'm told that engineered hardwoods that are glue-downs can handle mositure better than either laminate or plank hardwoods.

if you decide to do linoleum, look into the natural linoleum like marmoleum, as sheet vinyl is highly toxic to make and also offgasses into your home.

we have a very high grade eco friendly bamboo in our store and when a 5 gallon waterjug leaked onto it, it did get warped. a 5 gallon spill is not average, but still want to consider that for a bathroom....

Oh man, that's unfortunate to hear about the bamboo. I've looked into that at Lumber Liquidators and damn is it cheap. Given the age of this house, its probable that the oak hardwood found everywhere else also exists in the kitchen and bathroom, but after all these years who knows what condition its in, dry rot has probably set in....big nightmare. So it looks like we'll probably go with the tile.
