oven self cleaning

so do any of you use the self cleaning thing on your oven? where it locks the door and raises the temp to insane?

as long as ive lived here weve never sprayed stuff in our oven to clean and its pretty dirty with melty cheese or pepperoni here and there and some ash and what not, so tonight i decided to test out the self cleaning incinerator.

it smells hot and i put the range hood exhaust thing on but I'm still a little apprehensive. seems dangerous.

stupid i know but, is there anything to worry about? we have about 2 and a half hours to go....

The self-clean always freaks me out. Yeah, it always smells like that.

My mom always did it and it was fine, but I heard of a guy in my friends neighborhood who had a house fire from it. They had left when it was still self cleaning. So, just dont go anywhere or fall asleep!

i was told not to do it more then twice a year. something about getting so hot to often can be bad. i think that's why our microwave(mounted above oven) was fried.

Am I the only one who was completely misled about "self-cleaning oven"? I was envisioning mechanical hands with scrub brushes a la "The Cat In The Hat." How disappointed I was to learn that it just incinerated the baked-on goo....

(sorry, I have nothing constructive to offer)

I've had the same self cleaning oven for almost 10 years and I've never gotten up the nerve to try it yet... and I've been afraid to use anything in it to clean it because someone told me their's was ruined by that. Fortunately I don't use my oven much, lol! I was mostly afraid when I read that I couldn't use it around birds, and I had a bird at the time and then I kept thinking if it wasn't safe for my bird was it really safe for my children? So I thought I will do it while we are out of the house, but then I'm afraid to do it while we are out of the house becuase I've never done it before and maybe it's defective and will burn my house down...
