Anyone know any good children's books about not being scared of the dark? Or even that encourage a liking of the dark? There are so many that talk about "oohh scary dark". I have a lifelong fear of the dark and don't really want to pass this on to my children if I don't have to! I always try to talk about the animals that like to be out in the dark and the moon and stars. But I'd love to find some books to read to reinforce these ideas.

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

This is more of a natural history book, but Bat Loves the Night introduces a mama and baby bat who swoop through the beautifully illustrated nighttime. It makes night look wondrous and not scary. Also, in a sillier vein, Bats at the Beach!
Margaret Wise Brown's Wait Till the Moon Is Full has a little raccoon who wants to go out and explore in the night, but has to "wait till the moon is full." The final spread has all the animals playing and romping in the moonlight.

There's a cute black and white picture book called "Kitten's First Full Moon" by Kevin Henkes about a kitten thinking the moon is a bowl of milk.
When I went on Amazon to remind myself of the author of "Kitten's," the editorial review recommended "Moongame" by Frank Asch and "The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars" by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace "for nocturnal celebrations." I'm not sure if the illustrations in the two latter choices appeal to me as much.
"Tuesday" by David Wiesner is about frogs flying around at night and has no words, only illustrations. It could strike your child as very magical or very, very creepy. My mom hates it.
"Polar Bear Night" by Lauren Thompson just came up on a recommended list for me and looks very sweet and gentle.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I've been looking them up and have put some on hold at the library.
A friend also suggested "BOO to the WHO in the DARK" which they loaned us and the girls seem to enjoy it.
Keep the ideas coming though as I know there must be some more really good books for this out there.

If You're Afraid of the Dark, Remember the Night Rainbow by Cooper Edens. It starts out, "If tomorrow morning the sky falls...have clouds for breakfast." Another we liked was The Knight Who Was Afraid of the Dark

I don't know if you are trying to avoid "characters" but "Franklin in the Dark" is an excellant book. It's the original Franklin book ,written long before the TV show.
