so, will you be buying a "kindle"?

Check it out:

www.amazon.com

It's expensive ($400), and the purist in me doesn't like it.

Not for $400.

DP wants one long term. If they drop A LOT in price and our library carried books in that format, I would be all for that. Personally, I'm not sure if I would enjoy the experience as much as reading an actual book. Esp with the glare! That said, it could be very environmentally friendly--- think of the saved paper.

I would love one, but not for $400...

I love the idea, but there is no way I could spend that much. Maybe when the bugs are worked out and the price comes down. Unless some rich person were to send one my way...

Goodness, no. I'm a librarian and I've seen ebook gizmos come and go. Give me the real thing any day.

That would probably kill my eyes, so I'd say no. Plus there is just something wonderful about the act of flipping pages that can't be found on a screen.

Seems cool but probably not. I like books, I like saving my page and seeing a cover. Oh yeah and $400 is out of my range.

I'm very leery of the e-book format in general. I love books. I love holding books. I love turning pages.

Plus it uses the Sprint network and I'm not sure of the service level.

So for now, for me, I don't want one.

I agree.

Not for me......

there is just something about holding a good book and turning the pages. A kindle would take that away from my reading experience.

I was just talking to my boyfriend about this. He thinks its a good idea. I, however, just finished reading the "All Creatures..." series by James Herriot and am on to his son's biography of him, and love having a tangible book in my hand that I can carry with me, that doesn't run out of batteries, have the screen go "wonky", or any other number of electronic annoyances! So what if you can carry 4,000 books in it! When would you have time to read all of those- and if you by some chance got lost in the woods and survived and had all that time to read, where would you charge the thing?

I think they are sort of neat. There are tons of books that you can find online to download that could then be put into this device, I think (dh has downloaded some books to read on the computer; I assume this thing would read them), and it would be a heck of a lot less bulky than toting around the equivalent number of paper books.

The screens are specially treated so they don't kill your eyes; I don't think they are the same shocking white as a computer screen.

My MIL has problems seeing and she's bedridden at the moment and loving reading books on her computer, because she can click one button and change the font size so it's REALLY HUGE and doesn't give her a headache. I'd think that would be appealing for people who need large print and are frustrated with their current paper choices.

You actually can only carry about 200 books in it.

I think Amazon is cheap because they're making their "testers" give the Kindles back! It would be great advertising for them if they'd let those people keep it.

I won't buy anytime soon. I'm not into buying an electronic gadget until it's proven itself - the kindle is still new and I don't want to be a guinea pig. Not to mention, it's the cose is more than I've spent on books in probably the last 5 years. Also it seems to have very mixed reviews on Amazon.

Nope. I need real books.

I love books- the pages, the way they feel in my hands, the anticipation when I look at the cover. But I'll bet 200 books in one gadget will save a lot of trees! My dad is desperate for one, though the price is putting him off. It may save money in the long run if you buy one since the books themselves will be cheaper. You can enlarge the print, I hear, take notes, highlight, look for certain passages. They look cool. Hopefully my dad has been a good boy this year!

It's pretty dang cool but I can't see spending $400.00 for it. I am sure each book you download costs something also & the service probably has a monthly fee so my buying books at the thrift store & yards sales & reselling them to the used bookstore is probably cheaper since I spent very little cash on book... I just trade them.
