Mucous always = allergy?

my dd is almost 6 months.
as a wee one (6-8 weeks), she would get terrible gas and tummy upset (ebf)...writhing, crying, pulling off breast. so i gave up dairy, but only obvious dairy like milk, cheese, cream, etc. these behaviors changed and diminished.

for the past 2 months her poops have been very mucousy...usually a yellow/brown, no blood, just full of mucous.

sometimes, and more often now, she REALLY seems to strain to fart or poop. almost every morning she wakes struggling with a poop. often she almost growls and sometimes hollers:

my doctor, who i love b/c he's pro-bf and ap and is not big into intervention, doesn'y seem worried. he's just like "look at her, she's thriving".

but to me something seems not right. i worry my doc may err on the side of under-reacting to stuff. on the other hand, dh and i and both families have NO history of allergies but...

what do you all think? should i just not worry or should i go for a more strict elimination diet or what? any help or insight is appreciated.

TIA

The doctos is very used to seeing kids with "colic" it is very common. Common is not the same thing as normal. I would do whatever I could to figure it out.

The mucus is an early sign of gut irritation. IF you want my advice, don't let it go any further.

I agree. Gut irritation can be a precursor to food allergies and other problems. And not having a family history of allergies is getting more common. Many times food allergies happen because of an imbalance of gut flora (antibiotics, C-section delivery, yeast overgrowth, vaccines, etc.).

Personally, I'd start by eliminating all traces of dairy and I'd keep a food journal for several weeks to watch for patterns in your dc.

dumb question
how do you do a food journal
i mean how do you keep track or correlate your food to dc's poops?

I write down everything that goes in our mouths everyday. I also write down any symptoms that either of us experience. When I saw that she was getting really fussy with a serious fast-onset diaper rash every time I had soy sauce then I figured out it was wheat that was bothering her- since she doesn't react to soy otherwise. My dd seems to react within minutes or up to 36 hours.... Hope this helps- Lisa

It's not just eliminating foods, give bifidobacteria to seal up gut.

C-section and antibiotics are likely the reason for the allergies. See post #20 in Healing the Gut Cheat Sheet in main H&H forum.

So whaqt is the window for the bifido to help? Months? Years? Is it too late for my 4 yr old, who interestingly came up short of bifido on her stool test.

Does one need to give mega doses? What to use for the dairy sensitive?

Yes start small and work up to big doses. It is not too late. You may want a multiple strain.

Dairy sensitivity can be a symptom of a leaky gut. Read th e heal the gut cheat sheet, it will take awhile, but there is nothing like reading all the info on your own and doing your own research! In doing so you will start figuring out clues to sensitivities and how you can heal them.

To *prevent* allergies, animal studies have shown that sealing up gut with bifidobacterium only works in neonates. However, it has to be an integal piece of the puzzle with older children and adults. Studies have clearly shown that bifido delines as you age and effects colon health in elderly.

DS was this way until 12 mo. He is the healthiest baby now that I personally know though. We are celiac so his symptoms may have been from wheat contamination. Any gluten issues with you?
