Allergeric reactions to foods

My husband and I both have never had any allergic reactions to food, so I assumed my 14 month old was all good. We introduced solids slowly, but now he eats pretty much everything DH and I eat. However, the other night we gave him dinner and he had a VERY bad reaction. this is what we gave him
Roasted chicken (has had this a million times, no problem, has had it since, no problem)
Blueberries (same as chicken)
Fresh mozzarella cheese (same)
Some cut up "spiced apples" from Vons. It came in one of those ready made packs they sell at the deli.

So we think it was the spiced apples, obviously. His entire face turned blotchy bright red, all over his back, his legs, then he started breathing funny and almost choking. It was really scary.

Here are the ingredients per the website
Quote:
Sliced Apples, Apple Cider, Sugar, Brown Sugar, Water, Margarine (Liquid and Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Artificial Color, Water, Salt, Vegetable Mono and Diglycerides, Soy Lecithin, Citric Acid, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Vitamin A Palmitate Added), Modified Corn Starch, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Spice, Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Benzoate to Protect Flavor, Natural and Artificial Flavors.

I'm wondering if it's "spice" whatever the hell that means.

My question is...do I go to his Dr. about this? Obviously he was really allergic to something in t hose apples, but I'm not sure what "spice" entails. Should we get his allergies tested?

YES! See an allergist! With a reaction as severe as that, you should be carrying an Epi Pen. It sounds like he had an anaphylactic reaction, which can be life threatening. It is hard to pinpoint what exactly it was in the apples that he reacted to, since you don't know what "spice" is, as you mentioned, or "natural and artificial flavors".
My son has food allergies and we have really had to change how he (and we) eat. If I don't know what an ingredient is/means, we don't eat it.
I am sorry you had such a scare, but thank goodness your son is OK. I hope you can get in to see a doc ASAP and start figuring out what's going on.

oh yes, I think you should make an appointment with an allergist right away. that does sound like an anaphylactic reaction.
