Classroom snack - gets expensive/wasteful - Page 3

OT: I am so not okay with any of this. I would not participate in a such a system with the rules that have been outlined here.

These sort of stories make me think really hard about homeschooling.

If it were me, I'd send in a "kid friendly" healthy snack, such as a veggie and dip(carrots and organic ranch dip, or similar).

Most kids love carrots and dip.

How about organic cheese and crackers?

Grapes(cut in half) and yogurt tubes(organic) - kids love grapes!

And so on...

I completely understand your dilemma and way of thinking. My DS is sensitive, too, and we don't do junky foods and snacks, especially ones with food dyes. It bothers me to no end to see these kids sent to school with pure sugar and dyes in their lunch boxes every day. Ugh.

I've found when I have to supply food to an entire class, I have to step back and figure out a healthy yet friendly alternative to the junk so many of them are used to. I doubt very much many of the kids would actually eat stuff that we like at home, like hummus, etc.

Yeah, I agree. I would not strap myself to give other kids organic snacks when their own parents are bring cheese whiz cracker packets.

Seriously. When my daughter went to preschool, the teacher called me one day to tell me that my daughter's lunches were "too healthy", that she was getting interested in the junky food all the other kids were eating and didn't want what she had. So even if you can send you child's food, at some point many children will be so affected by their peers' food that their own healthy tastes will get ruined.

I'm homeschooling now, not for this reason, but it happy to say that dd has redeveloped her appreciation for good foods after time at home.

Berry bagels and apple slices, don't go all out with organic and high end, but each kid could get half a bagel and half an apple in slices and that's pretty cheap.
