IUD anyone?

So we thinking birth control. Both of my DDs have been conceived while on the pill. No abx, no missed pills, nothing. So we are not going that route. I also prefer not have something we have to mess with each time. What can anyone share with me about IUDs? I would probably lean towards the non-hormonal one since I am nursing and prefer less hormone tweaking.

Risks of copper? Good or bad stories? The ladies I know that have them, love them. Just curious!

No personal experience with the IUD, unless you count being born with one stuck to my hand...

Not in your DDC, just saw this on New Posts...

Actually, IUDs are pretty darned effective. Everything has some degree of failure, save abstinence.

I have a Mirena IUD. It is the one w/ the hormones, but they are pretty low. I can't handle any of the other hormonal b/c forms, like pills (even low-dose) or shots, rings, etc. But I had no problem w/ this one. The hormones in Mirena frequently never get much past the uterus & ovaries into the bloodstream. They tend to stay pretty local, since they're in such tiny doses. However, I was not bfing anymore when I got it (dd is 9), and even though I'm pretty sensitive to the hormones and never felt anything, I'd still check with a LC or two before getting it.

I love my IUD. I like not having anything to remember or deal with on a daily basis. And, because I have Mirena, I barely get any period at all (it's about halved the length and strength of my bleeding, though only barely touched my PMS!) I think I remember hearing that the non-hormonal IUD has the opposite effect, though.

I also believe the studies that say that fertility returns pretty much immediately after the IUD is removed.

The only thing that hung me up about it for a while, was the idea of putting a foreign object in my uterus. Eventually, though, when I looked at the real risks, not just my fears, the benefits outweighed the risks, for me.

I suggest talking to your partner, midwife/OB, LC if you can find one (or better, two), and if you're religious, pray/meditate on it. That's how I decided (minus the LC).

Good luck and HTH.

I don't have any experience to add, but will watch this thread, since I'm also thinking about a non-hormonal IUD at some point.

I don't have any experience so I probably have no business replying, but I know my MW is pretty against them. She said there is a risk of them puncturing your uterus, or just scarring it so that it is harder to carry babies later on. I was thinking of getting one but decided not to unless I was certain I didn't want any more babes.
My MIL had one and loved it, although she did miscarry her first pg after it. Not sure if it is related or not just an observation. She also just had a hysterectomy again not sure if her problems were related to something that could have caused or not.
The other negative I have heard is that for some religions it causes a problem because some of them allow the egg to fertilize but not implant. This may be something that applies to you or not.
I do know though that almost everyone who I have heard had one loved the ease of it while they had it. And they are supposed to be super effective. I guess you just have to research for yourself and decide if the benefits outweigh the risks in your situation. Because we all have different situations it is hard to tell one way or another on something like BC.

I had been thinking about the copper IUD too but my MW essentially talked me out of it yesterday.
